Another year had passed and Andy's attitude has gotten worse. He's still calling me names, he's distant, and when he's home, he just doesn't talk to me. The few times we've actually held a conversation have ended up in arguments and he just storms out, leaving me home alone. It's driving me insane! Right now is one of those times. Andy had just left after another argument. I was left standing in the middle of the living room. I sighed and ran a hand through my hair. I needed to talk to someone and I knew just the person. I grabbed my phone out of my pocket and dialed the number.
"Hello?" they said. "Hey Jeff. Are you busy right now?" I replied. "I'm never busy for you. What's up?" he said. I sighed. "Andy and I had another fight," I told him. "What about?" "The usual. Him being distant, him always calling me names. It's getting out of hand. I can't have a normal conversation with him anymore," I ranted. I heard him sigh. "First of all, I need you to take a few deep breaths and call down a little," he said. I did as he said and plopped down on the couch. "You okay?" he asked. "Yeah. A little." "Good. Now, tell me. What happened this time?" I took a deep breath before answering. "I don't even know anymore. I keep asking him what's going on and he always says that it's nothing. I'm starting to think it's a lot more than just 'nothing'," I started. "Well, what do you think it is?" he asked. "Part of me thinks maybe he's having some problems with work. Like, he either lost his job or he's just having some financial problems. But you would think he would tell me about that," I started. "What does the other part of you think?" "The other part of me thinks he could be cheating on me. I have no way to prove it, besides the fact that he's never home anymore." I could feel the tears start to form. "I'm sure that's not it," he said. "Then what else could it be?" I sniffled. I wasn't going to cry. "I wish I knew. But Emma, keep your head up. You're stronger than this. I'm sure things will get better soon," he said. I nodded. "I hope you're right," I started. That's when I heard the car door slam shut. "I have to get going. Andy's home. I appreciate the talk Jeff. Thank you," I thanked him. "No need to thank me. You know I'm always just a phone call away if you need me," he said. I smiled. "I'll talk to you later. Bye Jeff." "Bye Emma." I ended the call and put my phone back in my pocket just as the front door opened. I faced the door as Andy came in the house.
"Welcome back," I said with my arms crossed. "Whatever," he replied, walking passed me to the kitchen. "Are you really not going to say anything?" I asked, getting up and following him. He shrugged and grabbed a beer out of the fridge. He went to walk pass me again, but I stopped him and grabbed the beer out of his hand. "Give it back," he said. "Not until you start talking and tell me what's been going on," I said. "I told you. There's nothing going on." I could tell he was starting to get angry. Well, two could play at that game. "Okay. Then tell me, if nothing's going on, then why are you being so distant with me? Has something happened at work? Did you lose your job?" I pressed. "Work is fine. Just stop nagging me!" He clenched his fists. I wasn't done with this conversation.
"Or, are you cheating me? Is that why you haven't been talking to me? Is that why you apparently want nothing to do with me anymore? Andy, we've been together for five years now. We used to talk all the time and now all of sudden you stopped! What the hell is going on?!" I shouted. "I told you! Nothing is going on!!" he yelled back. "And I'm not cheating on you! Why would you even think that?!" "What am I supposed to think?! You're almost never home anymore! And you come home late every single day!" He didn't say anything. He just glared at me, his fists still clenched. "What?! You have nothing to say?! Shocker!" I exclaimed. "What do you want me to say?!" he snapped. "I already told you that I'm not cheating on you! You know I wouldn't do that to you!!" "Really?! I'm not so sure anymore!" I yelled back. He went to say something, but decided against it. "This is what I'm saying!! Why should I belie-" I didn't get a chance to finish my sentence when I felt his hand collide with the side of my face. I looked at him in disbelief. He didn't even look sorry.
"Did you really just hit me?" I asked, shocked. He didn't say anything. Just kept the cold glare on his face. "You know what, just go. Get out. I don't want to see you right now," I said as calmly as possible. "Fine," he said. He turned around and left the house. I heard the door slam shut and eventually, his car sped out of the driveway and down the street. I just stood there, dumbfounded. I can't believe he hit me. He's never done that before. I eventually went upstairs to the bathroom. I looked in the mirror and saw the red handprint on the side of my face. I sighed and went to the bedroom. I changed into my pajamas and lied down in bed. I stared at the ceiling and thought about what just happened. The hatred in his eyes said everything. I could feel the tears start to form and soon, I felt a few of them slip. I sniffled and curled up in bed and tried to let sleep consume me. I just hope tomorrow is a better day.
