The world flipped as soon as Alex and Bethany Betts drove to the art gala in Hallowell. It's was night. The stars were clouded over by big sheets of gray in the sky. A light drizzle started as the couple set out to view some masterpieces.
Bethany rested her head on Alex's shoulder as he drove. He remembered the first time Bethany had done that. Alex chuckled to himself. She could never stay awake.
Suddenly, Alex hit a pothole and the car swerved. A bright light flashed in his eyes for a split second. Bethany sat up, startled and they collided with another car, send Alex and Bethany tumbling into a ditch. Alex interlocked eyes with the woman in the other car. Her face was twisted in to a scream he couldn't hear. The couple's car slammed into a ditch. Alex sat there and heard the scream and screech of metal. He held his breath, and listened to the dripping of gas. Quickly, he turned to Bethany, who was slumped over in her seat.
"Beth!" Alex cried. He unbuckled her seatbelt. The car door was stuck, he pressed his weight against it. The dripping sound increased. He picked her up, but it was too late. The car ignited into a ball of fire. Smoke spread across the sky.

Cassie woke to the sound of fire engines speeding past her house. She wondered what her parents were doing.
