A bright light shone down on you, forcing your eyes to open. There was nothing beneath or around you, only open space. Was there sun? It didn't look like outside. Rubbing the drowsiness from your eyes, you sit up, but all around you was just simply nothing. No ground, no walls, just light. Looking around, your eyes searched for something, something in the great vast nothingness.
Were you dreaming? It didn't feel like a dream. But then again, dreams always feel real until you wake up. Interrupting your thoughts was a faint voice that reached your ears without warning.
"I long... for your touch."
Your head automatically whips around, trying to find the source of the voice. It was... a man. Lips pursed in frustration, you began to slowly stand up. There was still nothing. It was just white. Was there nothing? Surely the voice came from someone.
"We'll... find each other one day, right...?"
Another voice. It was different than the first, more... airy. But there was still no one to be found, as much as you looked for them.
"If only... we could be together..."
With no warning, your breathing became heavier. It was hard to inhale. The air felt thick. Who were these voices? They were all different in way, holding their own character and tone.
"I just need to... hold you..."
What were the meanings behind their words? It was becoming increasingly harder to breathe each second and you fought against it, sucking in as much as you could. They sounded in pain, sounded hurt. The reason however, you could never know.
In the time it took for you to blink, the whole world seemed to turn black all at once. The air was back to normal, but you could feel cold streaks that ran down your cheeks. They traced the outline of your face, starting in your eyelids and spilling out until they fell off of your face into the space underneath you. You were crying without even knowing. You reached up and wiped your cheeks to rid the moisture off of them, but nothing stopped the new tears from flooding. They were not warm tears, but cold. The kind of tears that made you clench your teeth as shivers ran down your spine, the kind of tears that were formed out of heartbreak.
As soon as the thought left your mind, your heart suddenly clenched, tightening in your chest. Your body was melancholy without your brain even processing the feeling. A small gasp for air escapes your lips as your hand flew up to grab the center of your chest over your heart, clutching the shirt's fabric with a death grip.
"Sometimes I wonder..."
The tears and tightened chest disappeared as soon as your emotions took over just a minute ago. This voice was different than all the others.
"...what it would be like..."
A soft silhouette of a person slowly revealed itself in front of you as your eyelids became heavier. They gave off a hazy light, but it lit up the space around you enough to feel better in the darkness. You tried to keep your eyelids from closing but you couldn't. No matter how much you fought yourself to open your eyes, your vision was still completely covered by the fuzzy look of your eyelashes in front of your pupils. Soon everything was dark once more.
"...to really love you in person."
Your upper body lunged forward until you sat straight up in your bed, choking on the air in forceful gasps to find relief. Once your gasps had turned into slow pants you looked around, taking in the familiar surroundings of your bedroom. Your sigh of relief felt like it had been waiting forever to come out, and your mind flashed vivid parts of your dream.
The light. The voices. The tears. The silhouette. You shook your head and lied back down into the mattress, staring into your ceiling. Your fingers found their way to comb through your tousled locks of hair, most likely messy from moving around so much while stuck in your mysterious dream. As much as you tried, you were unable to fall back to sleep; one question plaguing your mind all night:
What did your dream mean?
