On Love and Friendship

It’s like time. Or more like damp on iron, or even on stainless steel, which still rusts if you let it. It slips in, invisible. Into cracks. Into those places you forgot to protect. It corrodes your defences until you wake up one day and realise you’ve failed. You let someone in, and you didn’t even think you were at risk. You thought you had it under control. It wouldn’t happen; you’d learned from your mistakes.

Except you haven’t. And a part of you which you try to ignore wants this. That’s why there were cracks. That’s why your defences weren’t made of something less corrodible, less penetrable. And now that it’s through there’s no getting out. You either drown, or learn to tread water so you can ride the rapids and hope you come out the other end less battered and bruised than last time.
