IF THERE WAS ONE THING to be said about Angela Moore, it would be that she was strong. Perhaps too strong for own good. Being the daughter of a military sergeant, she took it upon herself to be her father's little soldier. She had always prided herself in her independence and the way she could always handle her own problems, never needing a man to assist. Everything she did throughout her life was in an effort to make her father proud and prove that she was a strong.
When her mother abandoned her and her father when she was twelve, Angela's eagerness to prove that she was strong meant all the more to her. From that point on, she took it upon herself to be the woman of the household, always putting on a brave face for her dad and never letting her emotions cloud her vision.
So, when she had agreed to go out with none other than Shawn Hunter—a boy notorious for dating around—she promised herself she wouldn't catch feelings. She wanted to prove she was stronger than that. She had watched other girls fall hard for Shawn Hunter and end up either crying in the hall to their friends or holding a bitter grudge against him for what felt like an eternity. She didn't want to be one of those girls. That was why when he asked her out, she took it as the perfect opportunity to prove to him, everybody else at school, and most importantly herself that dating a guy for two weeks was no big deal to her.
This whole mission of Angela's got started two months prior, at the beginning of her senior year at John Adams High School.
Angela had just moved to Philadelphia from Chicago where her father had previously been stationed. The move was far from amicable for Angela and she dreaded starting a new school, especially it being her senior year. She had thought that after hundreds of moves from city to city throughout her life, that starting at a new school wouldn't bother her anymore. But it did.
She never felt she could connect with any real friends because she simply wasn't in one place long enough to make any attempts. But this time, her father promised her it would be different.
"Angie, darling" He would pipe. "I know this move hasn't been the easiest on you—"
"Dad, I'm fine! The whole thing is fine, don't worry" She reassured, trying her hardest to convince both him and herself that what was bothering her wasn't actually bothering her. But it never worked—not completely at least.
"I know it's not fine" He sighed, feeling somewhat defeated. "But I'm proud of you for toughing this out for the both of us"
Angela couldn't help but smile at her father. He always seemed to know exactly what to say without overstepping or making her feel weak. He didn't have to lecture her or give her some long drawn out speech about the trials and tribulations of life. They both just understood one another and that was enough.
