"Hey, Jae!" I called out, holding the phone to my right ear. "Where are you?"

I heard rustling coming from the other end of the line for a few seconds before finally hearing his voice, "Sorry, sorry. I'm here."

Jaehyun's voice sounded raspy and tired, indicating he just woke up. My heart started skipping so fast, I swore it was about to rip off of my chest. God, why?

I cleared my throat and finally asked, "Did you just wake up?"

"Yeah, I'm sorry. I had closing shifts the past couple of days. I'm still getting used to it," he groaned before I heard rustling sounds again.

Looking up at the clock hanging on top of my vanity, I read the time to be 11:00 AM.

"Hmm," I hummed, "you okay though? Don't overwork yourself." My eyebrows furrowed in worry.

Jaehyun chuckled, "Oh, Mi. I miss you. Don't worry about me."

My face flushed red at his entire response. From calling me Mi to the I miss you, I just couldn't get enough of his voice.

In order for him not to notice my fluttering heart, I bit back with an annoyed response, "how can I not worry? You took your third job a couple weeks ago. Your body can barely hold on to your second one."

I didn't have to see his face for me to know he was smiling widely on the other end, "hey Cho Miyeon, I told you not to worry about me. I'm getting paid extra for those closing shifts. You know I could use the extra income."

I sighed loudly, playing with the sleeves of my shirt. Debating whether or not to bring it up, I decided to try and see if I can sway him, "I-I know this is a weird topic to talk about on the phone, but Jae, don't you think it's time to take your mom's offer? Like you said, you need th-"

"I don't have to and I don't want to take any of her money," Jaehyun abruptly responded. He didn't yell nor bit back. His voice remained cool and calm. At situations like this, an outsider would assume he was fine but to me, this is one of the most concerning tones.

Knowing this conversation would lead nowhere, I let out a defeated sigh and decide to switch topics, "Alright, Jae. Anyways, are you free today? I know you're tired bu-"

I was cut off again, "Of course I would love to see you! I'll get ready now. You know you can always tell me to come over."

He hung up and left me with my mouth wide open, about to respond.

I shook my head in amusement. This boy always left me with a whiplash.
