A knock echoed through his door, bringing him back to consciousness after only 4 hours of sleep. With half-opened eyes, he stumbled upon the mess in his little apartment. The one he rented not even a year ago, knowing his first year of residency in the hospital, paid enough to afford a bigger one. However, he had the urge to not waste his savings in "useless things" as someone who didn't care about comfort when his life felt like chaos. And at that moment, there was no better word to describe the storm going on in his mind.At the crack of the door opening, he felt his little one jump into him, screaming "Daddy" at the top of his lungs. Wyatt consumed him into a hug, while Enzo's diminutive figure disappeared into his chest. Enzo closed his eyes, taking in the fragrance of his Dad, who he hadn't seen in a week, except for those late-night video calls which he looked forward to every day. With his little hand, he would caress his father's face on the phone screen, pretending to feel his warmth, wishing he didn't have to work so late. He'd like to think his dad was a superhero just like those he painted and posted on the walls of his room.
Wyatt held his world; he needed Enzo just as much as Enzo needed him, or maybe even more. And there was no doubt his son was the only one that made him roll out of bed and bare through the hardships of the day. He put Enzo on the hardwood floor. Kneeling in front of him, he heard his soft giggles as he messed his fluffy black hair. Looking up, he saw Hana admiring the tender interaction between the two persons she loved the most. She knew she was only hurting herself, but she still loved him. She would still kill for those shy eyes, the same ones who didn't look at her the way she wished to be looked at.
Wyatt kissed her cheek, and she swore she saw heaven for a second. They got used to behaving this way in Enzo's presence. Wyatt did not want him to feel like they resented each other. Neither like it was his fault, his parents fell "out of love" and decided to live separate lives. They had one thing in common, they would do whatever it took for Enzo to grow up well, and would risk anything to keep him safe. But they knew it would hurt him more to live in a farce; no matter how little Enzo was, he understood.
