White. All I could see is a bright white light. It was getting closer and brighter. I tried to close my eyes to block it out but they were already shut. I reached up to block the light out but it was just getting brighter and brighter. I thought, maybe if it gets brighter to close my eyes..
Darkness, I opened my eyes to darkness. I realized I was in a dark room. I looked around and barely made out the shape of a lamp. I reached over and turned it on. I scanned around the room, but I didn't recognize anything that reminded me of home.
"Hello?" I called out, knowing nobody would answer.
Where am I? I kept hearing beeping noises. Maybe I could look around. I started to lift up but my head immediately started pounding. The beeping got louder and quicker, and some kind of alarm went off. The noise was driving me crazy. The door flew open and four doctors came rushing in with a cart full of medications.
"She's awake! She's awake!" One of the nurses shouted to no one in particular.
"Excuse me ma'am, but you need to lay down." One of the doctors said laying my head down gently.
Hospital. I'm in the hospital.
Why? How long? Why are they making such a big deal about me being awake? I closed my eyes because the pounding wouldn't stop. The doctors tried asking me if I was okay but I didn't know. I just kept my eyes shut. Hoping to block out any noise that was causing my head to throb like this.
"Why am I here?" I asked aloud, hoping for an answer from anyone.
I opened my eyes once again and everyone was rushing around the room working the machines. One of the men pulled out the tube from my IV. When did that get there? They are all running around me disconnecting wires like I some type of animal. Why isn't my mom stopping this? Wait, my mom, where is she?
"Mom?" I said out loud, waiting for a reply from somewhere in the room of chaos.
"She is on the way sweetheart, I just called her letting her know you were awake." Said the nurse who just walked in. "How are you feeling? Do you have any questions? I could try my best to answer them."
Oh you have no idea how many questions I have.
"Where is my mom? Why isn't she here? Isn't she supposed to be waiting for me?"
"She was, dear. She had to go home after a while. She had to go back to work to make money to pay the medical bills. She wasn't sure if you would wake up, dear. Nobody was." She looked at me with puppy dog eyes.
"Why would she have to pay medical bills? How long have I been in here?" I ask her. I have no clue what's going on and I really need answers.
"Sweetie," She looked at me in pity, "You were brought here unconscious 6 months ago. You had a major concussion and a fractured skull. We operated on you, and you were fine. Except, when we tried to wake you up after the procedure, you were unresponsive. We thought you were dead, until finally a miracle happened. You're tests were back up, but you were in a coma. "
"What!?" No wonder mom had to go home. "Why? What happened to me?"
"I'm sorry honey but you will have to talk to the doctor about that. He should come in by the time your mom gets here."
I hadn't noticed but all of the doctors cleared out of the room. The beeping continued though, it was really driving me crazy.
"This beeping, all the lights, it's giving me a headache. It hurts."
She gave me some medication and turned off the lights. She pressed a button, and then explained to me that the beeping will stop, but any big movements will cause an alarm to go off. I thought it was nonsense but she assured me how important it is for me to not get up. She stood up and walked to the door, opening it.
