"Pj this is so you," I laughed as I got up into his newly finished treehouse.
"Do you like it?" He asked.
"Do I like that my grown man boyfriend has built a treehouse in our backyard without being sure of the landlord allows permanent structures to be built in the yard? Hmmm, let me think about that..."
"Oh shut up," Pj hit me playfully. "Anyway, I told the landlord."
"Yes Pj you did," I nodded. "But what was the reason you gave the landlord again," I put my finger to the edge of my lips in mock thought.
"That our kids could use it," he mumbled shamefacedly.
"See the problem with that Pj," I said as I maneuvered further into the treehouse to stand beside him. "Is that I'm not pregnant."
"You could be, if you tried," Pj said.
"Wow good answer," I rolled my eyes.
"Are you seriously mad?" He asked, pulling me close, and wrapping his arms around me.
"No, of course not, I knew what I was getting when I moved in with you. My creative boy," I said and kissed him sweetly.
"You're so supportive," he said dragging me to the edge so we could look at the view.
"Well you do amazing things, even if sometimes they are a bit crazy, so being supportive isn't very hard," I admitted. It did have a lovely view. Pj had spent hours surveying the yard, making sure he picked a tree with a perfect view, and sturdy branches.
"Hey, some men need a man cave, I need a man.....treehouse," he said and laughed, knowing how odd it sounded.
"Man cave huh," I laughed too. "Does that mean you'll be hanging up a sign that says 'no girls allowed'?"
"You'll always be allowed in," he kissed my temple.
"Aw you're sweet," I said happily. "But Pj, please don't call it a man treehouse that sounds a bit like something a pedo would say," I joked. Pj rolled his eyes and bumped me playfully.
This is where it all went downhill. I wasn't the best, balance-wise, and his small bump made me lose my footing. I took two steps back, except, unfortunately, there was no wood under the last step. I tumbled down from the treehouse. I felt my head crash against something hard. something hot and wet soaked the back of my head. I felt nauseous, and stars exploded in my vision.
"Oh my god!" Pj screamed and got down as fast as he could.
"Stay With me y/n, stay with me!" He yelled as he dialed 999. I didn't want to stay awake. My head hurt so bad.
"Pj, I want to sleep," I slurred.
"No!" He ordered. He was crying, but I wasn't completely sure why. Everything was fuzzy and painful.
"If you die on me, I'm going to kill you," Pj shouted.
"Pj," I tried to say, but I slipped into oblivion.
When I awoke my head hurt like a mother fucker. Pain seemed to spread through my body instantly, and my brain felt like it was throwing itself against my skull. I was vaguely aware that I wasn't in my home. The aching was almost too much to bear.
A nurse bustled into the room, and when she saw I was awake she immediately sent pain medication to my IV. She didn't talk to me, which I was glad for since I didn't know how well I could form words. Everything felt like it was moving through molasses. The nurse had accomplished two things. The first being that my pain was slowly subsiding. The second was she'd woken up someone who seemed to be sleeping beside my bed.
When I turned to look, I realized it was Pj. He'd pulled a chair up to my hospital bed, and fallen asleep in it. His head had fallen onto my bed, leaving his back in an awkward position. But his hand was clutching mine.
"Y/n, you're awake!" He said, his voice filled with joy.
"Awake?" I asked, still feeling full of cotton.
"You fell from my stupid, bloody, treehouse," Pj said. "You've been out for three days, they weren't sure-"
He had to stop now because his voice had caught. I saw tears forming in his lovely, sea-green eyes.
"They weren't sure you would make it," his voice was raspy.
"I fell?" I asked. The pain was getting better, but sentences were still a bit hard to create.
Pj nodded now because he couldn't speak either. His eyes were welling up. I could see his face was covered in stubble, and his skin was pale. He looked thin. He must've been so worried.
"I'm so sorry," he choked out. He covered his eyes with his hands, as tears continued to pour.
"Why it wasn't your fault," I said this slowly and put a hand on his shoulder gently.
"Yes, it was!" He snarled. "If I hadn't built the damn thing, or brought you up, maybe this wouldn't have happened. And maybe if I hadn't pushed you, you'd be okay right now."
It was apparent the guilt had been eating him alive. His hands shook as he sobbed, clutching my hand as if I were fading away.
"I almost lost you," I could barely hear him.
"It wasn't your fault, I don't blame you," I said quietly. "Pj, it hurts me to see you this way, you need to forgive yourself."
"I don't know if I can. If I lost you, I would've lost my world."
"Pj," I said fondly, my hand caressed his face. He leaned into it immediately, obviously desperate for my touch. He leaned to the side and kissed my hand.
"Please, don't beat yourself up anymore. I'm going to be okay, we're going to be okay," I told him confidently.
"I love you with all my heart," he said sincerely, never removing his eyes from mine.
"I love you too," I said, and let him stand up and gently place a kiss on my lips.
