Another year

Hello again, Honey here. Today I am starting eighth grade. I have to admit I am a little excited. As cliche as it is, I hope there is new student, or at least some sort of change at school, like the furniture has been rearranged. As my mom and
I drive down this old and dusty road, we pull up to the check point. The conversation was predictable.
"Are you an American citizen ma'am?" the officer asked.
"Yessir" My mom responded.
"Yeah, you look like one. Are you smuggling anything?"
"No" He let us pass. We drove in silence for another 30 minutes until we got to my school. My mom pulled into a small parking lot made of dirt and gravel.
She wishes me well as I walk up to the dull building. It is just a big rectangle with a deck spanning the length of the building in the front. I walk across the deck past two other classes. The first I pass is the lower elementary class. There is a group of children in grades 1-3 standing outside a door.
Next I pass the upper elementary class with a group of older children. These ones are grades 4-6. I hated those years. I come to the end of the deck where my class is. I don't see any new faces. What was I expecting anyways. It's not like someone would want to come to a small school in the middle of almost nowhere.
I count 19 students in front of me. I make 20 of us. Olive catches my eye. She seems to be in deep conversation with someone. I walk up to them. As I got closer I saw who she was talking to. A seventh grader named Caleb. I don't know much about him. He transferred to our school last year so I was never in a class with him. From what I observed, I know that he is a quiet boy. Honestly he's a little like me, but with a smart mouth.
Olive turned around and smiled at me, but her expression quickly changed. She bolted towards the railing with a scared and surprised expression on her face. Short blond hair fell into her eyes.
"How did you get there?!" She yelled at me.
"You like just appeared behind me and didn't say anything!" She continued.
"What were you planning?" Her face wasn't scared anymore, but she was holding back a laugh. Caleb walked over to her.
"What was that?" Caleb questioned.
"Exactly what I wanted to know" I said as I walked over to the pair. Before I could say anything else's the door to the classroom opened and out stepped our teacher. Olive quickly jumped in front of him. He looked surprised. Honestly everyone is a little confused about Olive. She acts dramatic and compulsive, especially when she shouldn't.
Picture a bad scenario like you are getting yelled at by an authority figure or heard really bad news. Then add Olive and her strange behavior to the mix. Not a good combination.
We entered the class and put all of our stuff in cubbies. These cubbies were exclusively for the middle school students. We got the special addition of privacy because our cubbies had doors on the front.
Our teacher, Scott Cyprus, told us to choose a seat at a table once we put our stuff in the cubbies. There were a few round tables set up around the room in a patter that looked like someone threw tacks and wherever they ended up a table was placed.
Once everyone found where they wanted to sit we began. He explained what our year looked like and what we were going to be doing. I started to tune out and looked around. The groups of children were predictable. Caleb was sitting with Olive and I.
There was one empty seat at our table. There was a table of basic girls behind us. These basic girls are named Sophia, Maria, Jade and Camilla. Jade and Maria are friends, but a typical kind of friends. They get into stupid fights over anything, and then go complain to everyone about it. Sophia and Camilla are pretty normal as well, but they are better at keeping healthy friendships.
The table behind them has Juan, Emily, Josh, and Riley. Juan and Emily are siblings, but the chill and cool kind who act more like close friends and don't get you involved in their life. Josh and Riley are just there. They act like your typical middle schoolers as well, what a surprise.
Another table that is placed in sort of a mixture of beside and in front of us, has James, another Caleb, who we like to call Kale, Charlie, and Griffon. These are your typical sporty idiots. Not much else to say about them.
On our other side and behind us is the most annoying table of all. Heather, Anna, Ava, and Siena. Those names scream "basic bitch" from a mile away. They are so self conscious, but they also think so highly of themselves at the same time. I think Olive would fit I'm with them, if she chased guys all day, everyday of her life.
I look back to the front where Scott is still talking. He is trying to hype us up for an upcoming class trip. As per tradition, we are going camping to get to know each other better. Scott continues to go over details until the door abruptly opens and makes me jump a little.
"Oh, you're here!?" Scott said clearly started, but trying to hide it.
"Everyone, this is Cameron. He's a new seventh grader" My heart skipped a beat hearing we had a new student.
"You may take a seat next to Olive. Olive, please raise your hand" I looked over to Olive, but she was looking at the ceiling with a blank stare. It was pretty obvious where Cameron was supposed to sit, as the seat next to Olive was the only open one, but he stood awkwardly next to Scott. I tapped her on top of her head. She snapped out of her trance and looked at me. I motioned to the front where Scott was staring at her, clearly annoyed.
"Olive" Said Scott coldly.
"Raise your hand. Cameron is going to sit next to you"
"Oh" She said clearly confused and raised her hand. Cameron came and sat in silence at our table and Olive slowly drifted away again, back to her own world. Scott continued his boring teaching and I continued the boring day.  It slowly moved by as we played games to "break the ice".
The week slowly passed by, as most weeks for me do. Finally it was Friday. I got to school at 7am. The class, a few substitute teachers as chaperones, and one bus driver were the only people left in the parking lot by 7:25. Today was the all important and very hyped up class campout. Role was taken and we boarded the rented school bus.
I took a seat next to Olive and got cozy for the long ride ahead of us. Jade and Maria walked past us having a very loud conversation about how annoying they find everybody.
"God I hate those two" Olive muttered under her breath.
"Yeah" I said softly. The conversation is left there and we sit quietly as the bus pulls out of the dusty little parking lot and we leave my sad school behind.
