MEGAN
It has been a whole year since Cathy, my best friend, bid us farewell. Her departure was closely followed by Wilchie, who left just a week later. Cathy embarked on a journey to pursue her scholarship, while Wilchie set off to chase his career aspirations. Cathy's new life in a different state led her to sever ties with Jesswelie for good, closing a chapter in their friendship.
Similarly, Reika turned down Wilchie's advances, fearing the challenges of a long-distance relationship. She made a choice to protect her heart, even if it meant sacrificing the possibility of a romantic connection.
Meanwhile, Lily and Kian have grown closer as friends. Kian has gracefully accepted the rejection and embraced their newfound camaraderie. Their unique bond fascinates me, as they navigate their friendship with ease despite the underlying complexities.
"Megan! Are you even paying attention?" Camile's voice snapped me back to reality, prompting me to shift my gaze toward her.
Yes, Camile and I have become friends over time. We shared a summer class back in Grade 10, and our paths have remained intertwined ever since.
"I apologize. I was lost in thought. It's hard to believe that it has already been a year since Cathy and Wilchie left, and we haven't had any communication with them," I admitted, taking a sip from the juice in front of me. Camile appeared lost in her own musings as well.
"Well, I guess I shouldn't bother talking to you then," she replied with a hint of annoyance. Moody as ever, that's Camile for you!
"Hey, Jaz, don't pick a fight with my girlfriend," Niccolo scolded Camile, coming to her defense. She rolled her eyes and turned away, maintaining her feisty demeanor.
Some things never change, and Camile's fiery spirit is a testament to that.
"I don't know what's gotten into the two of you. You're both absolutely crazy," Camile muttered, shaking her head before bidding us farewell and walking away.
Niccolo and I exchanged glances, sharing a silent understanding.
"You really know how to push Madam Camile's buttons," Kian chimed in, unable to contain his amusement as he laughed to himself. He seemed to be the only one entertained by his own joke, bursting into laughter without any external stimulus.
"Hey, Kian, I suggest you hold your tongue. Your remarks aren't helping the situation," Reika retorted, visibly irritated by Kian's comment. Kian simply shrugged, brushing off her annoyance.
"You're just speaking from a place of heartbreak," Kian teasingly remarked, sporting a mischievous grin. Reika shot him a scornful look, unamused by his attempt to lighten the mood.
"By the way, Niccolo, where is your cousin?" Reika inquired, leaning back in her chair, her curiosity piqued.
"He's at the back of the school, seeking solace in solitude," Niccolo responded, providing her with the information she sought.
"Ah, I see. I think I'll join him there. I need a moment of tranquility," Reika announced, rising from her seat without further explanation and making her way out of our company.
A deep sigh escaped my lips, catching Niccolo's attention as he turned his gaze toward me.
It has been a year, yet the wounds of heartbreak haven't fully healed for both Jesswelie and Reika. Jesswelie has withdrawn into her own world, no longer inserting herself into conversations as she used to. On the other hand, Reika always seems burdened and disinterested, carrying an invisible weight upon her shoulders, as if the weight of the world rests upon her.
