I woke up in a tired sweat. My legs were sore from what I assumed was constant running, and my stomach growled aggressively. Luckily, I was able to pull my aching body to my feet. I looked around, but I saw nothing. Nothing but sand. Far out in the distance, there were some mountains. In the other direction was a tall plume of black smoke. Vague explanations came to mind, but ultimately puzzled me. My brain produced reasons for the smoke, but none stood out as the truth.

I understood what it was, and that something over there was likely on fire, but I couldn't remember why I was way out here. The location of the plume seemed familiar to me, but I didn't know why. Amnesia; my brain produced the word. I was racing for answers I couldn't produce.

There was a growl from under my feet. I looked down quickly, terrified of what was hidden by the sun bleached terrain. The sand moved ever so slightly, and produced a set of fingers. Grey and rotten, long devoid of blood, a hand with only three fingers moved the sand around, and worked to excavate the rest of its body. I shuttered in horror as I noticed something to my left out of the corner of my eye.

The zombie's torso sat straight up and rotated around to look at me. Old, dusty, and crusted clothes clung to its body, like baby birds to its mother. But the miracle of birth was the polar opposite of this ghastly sight. The one under me grasped my attention, and my ankle. Instantly, I felt my stomach tighten with a fervor for food that I'd never known. I watched only; stunned at the face poking through its gritty grave. It opened its mouth at me, sand flowing into its mouth, but seemingly unbothered. It was too focused on me. Ironically, the thing that saved me wasn't me.

The other husk of a man stumbled as it ripped its foot out of the sand. Or rather, its foot began separated from its place on the leg. The fiend stumbled into me and shoved me to the ground while it fell on the one that had drained my hunger. I was still parched, but my limb had been freed. I stumbled back to my feet and scurried away from the husks. My stomach was still in a knot, and I was unable to flex my abs. Bent over and nearly crumbling, I had to crawl. Thankfully, the ghouls weren't much faster than I was.

I angled myself to follow the plume of smoke. The effect of the monster had worn off by the time I found a hill. I was still devilishly hungry, but now at least I could move without hurting too much. I made my way to the top of the hill in strafing movements so as to not fall down with the tide of the sand. I turned around to find not two beasts, but now a small group of them. I slowly counted them out, and lost count a few times. I settled on the number 14, though I was unsure of its accuracy.

I sighed heavily and laid down in exhaustion. My vision swirled as I watched the plume of smoke go up slowly. Being so far away, the smokey tower seemed small, but I knew it had to be large, based on the fact that it had been burning for multiple hours now.

My attention returned to the sand covered zombies below my. I watched with a smile as they stumbled up the mound a bit, then stumbled and fell, provoking gravity and the tide of the sand. One of them became fully enveloped in the dry avalanche.

Laying back down, I stared at the sky. The smoke had covered most of the sky, and blocked the formation of most clouds.

Suddenly, I thought my vision was going funky again. I saw small clouds darting across the sky like bugs seeking out a food source. There were countless numbers of them. It was then that I realized those small clouds were people. Actual people.

"HEY!!!" I screamed out of my dried lungs. I dragged my tired body to my feet And tumbled down the hill. Slightly embarrassed, I got back to my feet and yelled again. Finally, my body gave out. I was genuinely wondering when that would happen. My vision went black as I saw a few of the figured flying down to where I had fallen.
