I open my eyes Slowly looking around to realize where I am. The Car... I let out a soft Groan and I quietly Mumble to myself.
"Aw, C'mon Champ! What are you groaning for?" My Father said as he messes with my hair. I try to swat his hands away but he keeps his grip strong.
"Keep your eyes on the road you old man!" I said laughing while throwing a blanket over my head. He laughed along with me as we exited the freeway and into town.
"Old man? Who you calling an old man?!" He said calmly as he pulled over into a gas parking lot with us both laughing. He pulled up next to a gas tank to fill the car up. "Okay, I'll be right back." He said as I pulled the blanket off my head and started to fix my hair.
I pick the blanket up again and gently set it on my lap calling to the back of the car. "Come here Gunnar," I say in a singsong voice, "Come here boy!" I say as a Quiet bark came from behind the passenger seat. I turn around and I pick up a kennel and open it up.
A small puppy runs out of the cage and onto the blanket on my lap. I look down at the dog and gently rub his head. "Hey buddy, how are you doing?" The small dog replies with a small yip as he starts to curl up on her lap. I continue to pet his head as my dad opens the car door and hops in.
"I see you wanted to cuddle the dog?" He said giving his words a little chuckle.
"Yes, I was lonely! And Cold." I say calmly. My dad shakes his head snickering.
"You goofball." He said as he started up the car again. "You know, When I was your age I had a Boxer Puppy too." He said as we pulled onto the Freeway again.
"Hm, That's why you wanted another one?" I said keeping my eyes on the dog.
"Yeah, There just such wholesome creatures." He said smiling. I gently lay my head down on the pillow that was in between me and the door. I gently close my eyes as I wait for the warmth and coziness of sleep to take me away.• • •
I feel a hand gently grab my shoulder as It shakes me awake. "Wake up Sweetie, We're here." My Father says quietly as The sun starts to dip below the mountains beside our new home. I sigh quietly as I put Gunnar back in his kennel. "Eveline, come help me with the beds." My dad says as he opens the trailer door.
I hopped out of the truck and down to my dad. "Go open the front door, there should be a key under the mat." I nod and run to the front door. I bend down and raised the mat and quickly grabbed the key. I gently put the key in the lock and twisted it till I heard the little Click And took the key out and opened the door slowly.
The house was cold, dark, and empty. We had to throw away some of our furniture items in the move because we didn't have as much space to put all of it in. I stepped through the doorway and into the house to flip on a light when something in the room next to me tumbled.
I jumped when I heard the noise, but when I found the door I slowly opened it, the door making an eerie squeak. I peaked my head through the door barely before my dad yelled for my name. I jumped again surprised and ran out the door to him.
"Where'd you go Champ?" He said moving the mattress of the tail gate and onto the ground.
"Oh, I kept dropping the key." I said Calmly. My dad gave me a friendly glare.
"When did you get so Clumsy?" He said with a chuckle. I went closer to him and I helped him pick up the mattress and move it into the house. We placed it in a small room in the front of the house, with a medium sized window looking out over the other houses in the cul-de-sac.
We gently sent the mattress down on the floor while my dad ran out the door. I looked out to where he ran confused but followed him. "Okay..?" I said happily. I waked out the front door as my dad ran into the house with a bunch of blankets in his arms. I smiled and shook my head.
"At least I know where I get my weird side." I say quietly as I open the truck door and take Gunnars Kennel and take it into the house and into my room. When I walk into the doorway my father was on the floor in a pile of blankets. "Dad are you sure your alright?" I say as I set the kennel down and walk over to him.
"Oh yeah, I'm fine. I just want you to be warm tonight." He says standing up. I slightly shake my head.
"I'll be fine, but you need some too." I say handing him a few of the blankets. "Now, go sleep. You have work in the morning and you need to get to bed." I say hugging him.
He hugs me back tightly. "You need sleep to, you have school tomorrow," He said as we both let go. "Now you go and get ready for bed, and I'll get ready for bed." I nod as he starts to leave the room.
"Goodnight dad!" I say as I grab Gunnar's kennel.
"Goodnight Eveline." He said as he grabs the door handle and quietly closes the door. After he shut the door all the way, I set the Kennel down on the mattress and open it up to see Gunnar lying down sleepily. I gently set the kennel down next to the mattress and slowly stand up, and quietly walk over to the window and close the curtains.
She lets out a soft sigh and walks to the closet and starts to change. She kneels down on her bed and sets her pillows up to a comfortable position. She moves herself under the blankets and curls up slowly on her side breathing softly. She slowly closes her eyes as she falls into a dark, and cold sleep followed by a raspy voice in her head saying, 'Goodnight Eveline.."
