Bear Paw lay me down on a deer hide, gently, then placed my arm on my chest. I fought back tears, because my arm felt like it was going to fall off. He sat on the side of the hide and stroked my hair, which was up in braids. That's how I got my name. I have Raven Black hair and I always wear it in two braids that cover my ears. Bear Paw twisted one of my braids with his fingers.
" I'm sorry you got hurt so badly. I'm glad I could help," Bear Paw said with a frown, then a small smile.
" Thank you, Bear Paw. But I'm so dumb. My father was right. I'm not ready to go out on my own." I sighed, and lay on my side so I was not facing Bear Paw.
" Maybe not on your own. But if someone comes with you, maybe you could survive," he said quietly. I rolled over to face him. He leaned in close. I held my breath.
"I'll protect you from your dad. I promise," he whispered. I couldn't help it. I hugged him. Bear Paw hugged me back.
"Excuse me..." I heard a deep angry voice say.
"Uhhh, hi, Father."
