"EEEEEEEEEEEEK!" I covered my ears from the noise of hell that was coming from my phone. My friend, Rose was calling me at dawn...DAWN!
I hate being woken up. I'd rather wake myself up. But today, it was gonna be worth it.
I groaned into the phone, making Rose giggle. "Ok fine, I'm up." I mumbled as I walked over to my bathroom, holding my phone to my ear with my shoulder as I pulled my slippers and robe on.
"Okay, good. What should I pack for the beach? Like I packed three bags but I'm thinking I should pack another one." She rambled on and on about some weird fashion tip she found online about how to look sexy at the beach.
"Jade, are you even listening?" My best friend since 2nd grade whined.
"Ya I am." I replied through the toothpaste foam and I put her on speaker so I could hear her throughout the entire apartment.
She started ranting about how there weren't anymore organic sunscreens left at the store in her favorite swedish brand and how her tennis wristband still left a tanline on her arm.
I turned the water on in the shower and connected my phone to a pair of speakers so I could hear her over the water, not that she wouldn't be able to be louder than the noise.
"So what do you think?" She asked.
I lathered some shampoo into my hair. "Remember Rose, we're only going to be there for a week. I need to fly to the UK for orientation at Oxford. And I'm officially putting you on a luggage limit to one suitcase."
"Okay, fine." She huffed, clearly not happy with the arrangement. "Well, what are you taking?"
"You know, the usual. Swimsuits, shorts, muscle tees, sunscreen, etc." I replied, putting the final touches on my makeup, which consisted of one layer of waterproof cat-eye mascara and a touch of concealer.
"Okay. Well, I'll see you soon. We're meeting at your apartment parking lot, right?" She asked.
I snatched my phone from the speaker home system and my duffel from in front of my bedroom door and checked my watch. 6:34. Huh, a new record.
"Yup." I replied into the phone with a slightly triumphant tone.
"You set a new record, didn't you?" Rose asked.
"Yup." I replied shortly.
"Jade, you are the single most competitive person I know. It's not normal for a girl to get ready in...5 minutes?"
"Four."
"See? It's just not normal. It's like you're a Human 2.0 or something. No, not even a 2.0. You're the 3.0 because the 2.0 is too slow and inefficient for you."
"Whatever. You gotta..."
"I know. You gotta act like the best to be the best." She finished with a huff. "But you're always moving too fast. You really should slow down and just enjoy life a little."
"I'll have time to enjoy life when I'm old and wrinkly and have made a bucket list." I snapped, whipping up some chocolate chip waffles with one hand and dicing fruit with the other.
Didn't she understand that I just needed the satisfaction of winning, then beating myself? She's been my friend for 10 whole years now. She should know this.
"Anyways. I'll see you soon and make sure to bring plently of sun tan lotion so we can catch the last rays of summer."
