I woke up the next day with a really bad headache and I was considering not going to school. I just laid in bed until the last minute I decided school is better than sitting here all day. I got ready for school and as I walked out the door I realized I had no way of getting to school. This is just great. I missed the bus I was supposed to be riding. Now how was I supposed to get to school? Crap! I pulled out my phone and looked through my contacts. I couldn't call Angie or Nessa neither of them had a car. I didn't know who else to call.

"Hello?"

"Hey Brandon, can you give me a ride to school?" I asked.

"Yea babe sure. I'll be there in five." He hung up before I could say anything. Jerk.

About 10 minutes later he pulled up in a BMW.  I got in hastily. I put on my seatbelt and crossed my arms. When we didn't start moving I looked at him. He was smiling.

"Don't think we're going out just because I asked you for a ride." I said.

"Well I heard you and Rob broke up."

"And?"

"And, I think you should give me another chance." He poked out his bottom lip. He was so cute. I turn away from him.

"No."

"Please...you're so beautiful...please Katrina...please." I looked at him.

"You broke my heart Brandon. No, take me to school." I said crossing my arms again. He sighed and we started moving. I wonder if Brandon could loan me $250. I mean he was filthy rich and I really needed that money. The worse thing he could say is no right?

"Brandon?" I said sweetly, turning in my seat so I was facing him. He looked at me.

"Yes, sweetheart?"

"I was wondering if you can do me a huge favor."

"Oh yea? And what is that?"

"Could you loan me $250 please...Brandon. Please." I gave him my puppy dog look.

"$250? Wow that's a lot babe...sure I'll give it to you. If you be my girlfriend." He smirked. Ugh. I should have seen that coming. I slumped in my seat. Ok maybe I could dump him after I turn in the money. Yea I'll do that.

"Ok." I said smiling. He narrowed his eyes.

"Wait a minute...You're not gonna dump me after I give you the money are you?" he said. Crap.

"Of course not." I said nervously.

"Yea you are, I change my mind...and we are at school." he said.

"No! I won't I promise please...I really need that money!"

"Trina do you know how pathetic that is...paying you to be my girlfriend, forget that." With that he got out the car. The rest of my day was like poop. I didn't talk to anyone. Robert was steady ignoring me. I had no way of getting home and I sure as hell wasn't asking Brandon. I decided to walk the 5 miles home. I got home at 5 o clock. I walked in the house. Ugh...it stinks in here. I went straight to my room and started on my homework. I couldn't finish it...I just couldn't figure out how I was going to get rent, 5 months' worth of rent. I went to the kitchen and took out the big tub of ice cream and watched TV for the next hour. I expected my mom to come out complaining as usual. But she didn't, maybe she wasn't here. I went to her bedroom, she wasn't there. I was right. She probably went out to have sex with some dude for the money. She did it before why wouldn't she do it now? At least we would have money. I finished my show and went to take my shower and that is when I saw my mom on the floor.

"Mom!" I ran to her. "Oh my god! Mom! Wake up!" I shook her violently. I really hoped she was passed out. I put my head to her chest. I couldn't hear her heart. My vision got blurry.

"Mom! Please wake up!" I yelled over and over, tears pouring down my face. I went to get my phone and called 911. They were here in 5 minutes. I didn't need them to tell me she was dead I already knew. I sat on the steps as they put her in a body bag and into the ambulance. Tears were still falling freely, she wasn't the best mom in the world but she was all I had. And now I had nobody, this thought made my cry harder. All alone. I man walked over to me and sat down next to me and introduced himself as Detective Davis. Though he wasn't wearing a police uniform he showed me his badge.

"What's your name?" he asked when I didn't say anything.

"Katrina."

"I'm really sorry about your mom." I just shrugged. I didn't feel like talking.

"Do you have any family you can live with." I shook my head.

"We'll look into your records and see if you have a secondary contact. Ok. Come on." He stood up.

"Where are you taking me?" I said hesitant. He looked back.

"Down to the station." I got into the front of the cruiser. I rode in silence even though Davis tried to make conversation but gave up when I didn't talk back. I sat in one of the chairs at the station. California police department.  I stared at that sign for at least 3 minutes wondering what happened to my life. Ringing phones...crying parents....evil looking prisoners. This place is hell. I shouldn't be here. I should be at home sleep with my mom crashed on the couch. Not at a police station waiting for the police to find family I didn't have. I must have fell asleep because I was shaken awake by Davis. He was sitting beside me with a folder in his hand.

"Ok we got a place for you to live but its far in Pennsylvania." He said. "Do you know someone named Christine?" I racked my brain, nope doesn't ring a bell.

"No." I said.

"Well we gave her a call and she said that you and your mom used to live with her when you were little."

I just shrugged. I decided I wouldn't go. I didn't wanna go live with someone across the country that I didn't even no. I stood up.

"Ok Davis, I'm not going anywhere. I don't know this lady and I'm not about to go live with her. I can take care of myself." I walked off.

He caught my arm and turned me around.

"You're going whether you like it or not." I wonder what would happened if I punched a cop.

Well a week later I was on a plane to Pittsburgh.
