sam and catherine had known each other from living in a small town. 

sam was an athlete, catherine was a bookworm.

sam spent her days socializing at school, going to volleyball practice, and competing on weekends. being competitive was natural for her. sam was outgoing, personable, and a school favorite.

catherine didn't enjoy high school. studying and learning were important to her, but people weren't her priority. catherine was organized, ocd, and very uptight.

while sam found communication through friends, catherine rested in her interactions between teachers. she never felt as if she could relate to those her age. 

the two were opposite in almost every way.

the soft whispers of students during mrs. johnsons 4th period us history class was always a pain to catherine. the voices, one of which seemed to always stand out, could make her blood boil in a matter of seconds. 

"morris," sams soft voice cut across the talk of john jay. "wanna hitch a ride after practice? i'm so in the mood for som-"

"miss nichols, please stop talking during my lecture," catherines favorite teacher sighed.

"yes ma'am, sorry"

"now back to what I was saying," mrs. johnson continued.

catherines mind was racing. how could someone talk during one of the most interesting speeches in class? not that she was listening, but what was sam in the mood for? forget that, we're talking about john jay, the first man with a dream job. 

as the class dismissed and the bell rung, the class gathered up their belongings and began to exit. not that catherine was a kiss up, but after every class she would always stop and talk to her favorite teacher. 

"cat, how has your day been going?" mrs. johnson asked.

"it's alright I guess. was your 2nd period any be-"

as catherine began to finish her sentence, sam walked up and asked to speak with the teacher. 

"talk to you later jay," catherine responded softly. after walking past sam she rolled her eyes. all she could think of is how she always cuts her off. sam had never done anything wrong to catherine, but every little detail seemed to make her blood pressure rise.

the classroom cleared and sam began to quietly talk with the teacher. 

"this is really respectable sam, thank you for taking initiative and building up the courage to talk to me. I can have your first tutoring session scheduled for tomorrow?"

sam thought, "I have practice at 5, but I can until then."

"awesome meet in room b5 and bring your textbook after school alright?" mrs. johnson responded. 

"sure thing."
