Sonic drove home, a long night at work had made him tired but not tired enough to remember the special occasion for today. It was July 3rd. The day that Sonic could never forget, the day the two love birds had finally gathered the courage to ask one another out. It reeled them into a world of pure empathy for one another.
Sonic smiled positioning the rear-view mirror to the back seat where some new books, chocolate, and flowers rested peacefully. This was their night and he was gonna make sure it was a good one.
The same ride home for five days a week always felt the same- tired, eager to go to bed, happy to see Tails. It was if his mind was into a routine of the constant way of life. Do this, do that.
The streetlights casted light onto the car making it gleam. It blended well with the dark night sky which was crisp with coolness.
Sonic turned on the radio to the couple's favorite station. The song See You Again by Charlie Puth. Came on, one of Tails's favorites. Sonic turned the volume up gently before coming to a stop sign.
Home wasn't far and he knew Tails has something in store for him. The fox never forgot a holiday. especially today's. It's amazing to think it's been 5 years already.
"Maybe he will be in that maid outfit..." Sonic snickered feeling a blush cross his features. His pants made a movement which made him shift in his seat to get more comfortable.
Sonic could feel his heart racing with anticipation. His fox would be in his arms here soon, nothing could go wrong with the two tailed wonder near his side.
The thing the hedgehog didn't know was that this wasn't just another Wattpad novel with a happy ending. Where everyone turns out okay and lives happily. No...this was real life, and real life was never like that. With love came pain, and with pain came suffering.
Sonic pulled onto the street, any moment he would be pulling into the drive. Except something was off. Cars lined the streets. People stood on their porches gossiping about something that seemed to intrigue them. Some pointing farther down the street, others walking down the sidewalk to see what the commotion was about. Water off the asphalt street and glistening homes reflected lights of red and blue.
"What is going on?" Sonic said confused.
He turned a curve in the road and that is when he felt a pain he would never forget, somewhere deep down something unrepairable broke and shot pain into his heart.
A crowd had formed in front of the street where his home sat disturbed. Three cars with lights casting red and blue lights across the neighborhood blocked the drive and surrounding yard.
It felt so surreal to Sonic. When his vehicle screeched to a halt. When he ran past the cops. When he opened that door.
The crowd made way, whispering among themselves as Sonic approached his steps. Caution tape had been tightly wrapped around his porch beams like a ribbon on a gift. A cop with a look of pure sympathy stood there not making eye contact with the blue hedgehog that pleaded for answers.
"Are you Mr.Sonic?"
Sonic nodded not really feeling the motion of it.
The cop lifted the tape up letting the hedgehog go under. Sonic's legs felt wobbly, and uneven. He stumbled to the side catching himself on the house. His chest burned with an unbearable sensation, a pain that he could hardly bare. He opened the door, that had been sparred along the edges.
The scene that exposed itself made Sonic fall to floor, between the black skies and his red eyes he could barely speak. No sound came out. Just a flow of steady tears that formed splats of surrow upon the ground. He didn't even hear the detective when he told Sonic whose blood it was. Whose blood was painted across the walls of this safe haven. The test that came back positive for his beloved fox he so adored.
A storm was raging within Sonic, his hope gone. He felt the glass under his hands as he gripped the floor roughly. Trying to make the ragged pain of glass shards overcome the ridged pain in his chest. The solid ground began to fall out beneath Sonic, a darkness had formed where there once was joy. He saw their future...thier picture...slowly fading away. Bullet holes had not just penetrated the walls but his soul as well.
How could this happen? Why was it happening? A war of emotions began to form in Sonic's heart. All those hopes and dreams gone. The tears of pain and heartache running down his face. Why...why..why? What did he do to deserve this?
Not his fox, not Tails. That perfect angel who rested dearly in his heart. Sonic looked up, his vision blurry, his heart broken, his mind a swirling storm of rage and sadness.
A picture, of The Fox smiling, stared back. Those eyes full of joyous times when life was a game of fun and love... Yet the glass was now broken into shards. Chili dogs sat on a plate at the table, candles once lit splattered across the floor, and a gift wrapped neatly and nicely in a bow sat at the table, a bloodied glove held onto it dearly but the owner nowhere to be seen. No body, no reasons, no clues. The case was opened just as fast as it closed. And so was Sonic's front door to the outside world.
You could trust no one. You could believe nothing. You couldn't let your guard down. He didn't love anything more than that yellow two tailed fox. The world took that from him, so the world didn't deserve any mercy not grace from the hedgehog. He hated the world as much as he hated himself.
The next five years would be this way...for five years the memories of July 3rd would haunt his conscious forever. The five years that followed would forever change his life, because this wasn't just another Wattpad novel with a happy forever after...this was life, and life was like a virus. It infected, it made you sick, it took away those you loved with no mercy. Just as it did to Sonic on that day, when he should of said,
"Happy anniversary Tails."
