"Ave, Mari-a. Ave, Ma-ah-riiiii-a. Aaaaaavvvv-ve, aaaaa-"
"Stephanie, time for breakfast!"
"Ok, Mum!"
Stephanie had been getting dressed - while singing, of course. She was never able to start the day without singing. This time, she'd been practicing a favorite from her opera last night.
As Stephanie strode into the kitchen, she gave her mother a quick peck on the cheek.
"Oh, Mum! Waffles again! Yumm-eeee!"
Stephanie's favorite breakfast was waffles. As she sat down, her mum pushed a plateful over to her.
"Hurry and eat, Sweetheart. Remember you've got school to go to."
Stephanie nodded - then she positively wriggled with delight as she stuffed hot waffle, spread thickly in butter and dredged with maple syrup, into her mouth. She sat chewing with a grin of intense happiness.
"Angelus, ad Dominum, sub intrans inquit Ave. An-"
"Stephanie!" Her mum sighed. "You're hopeless!"
Stephanie couldn't resist and a smile crept over her face.
"Yes, I am."
"And?"
"I wonder where I get it from."
Mrs. Dianne Colon laughed and laughed, unable to control herself.

Sarah stood before her stepdad, trembling, and raising her hand to feel her bleeding lip. She stared dumbly up at the man who towered above her."Tomorrow and every day after that you will be ready for school at four, precisely, you understand?" Her stepdad's voice was so high-pitched he was almost screaming.
"Yes, Dad." Sarah turned to leave the room, as a tiny drop of blood tricked down her chin and landed in the doorway. As soon as she was out of his line of sight she bolted wildly for the family's cheap car and threw herself on the back seat, trying to compose herself before her stepdad came out to drive her to school.
