When I was six years old, I was considered more mature than the other children because instead of going outside and playing tag, I would sit inside and learn to sew, or while they went and played hide and seek, I would watch my mom bake pies and cakes. Learning intrigued me as well as antique items.
I would always wonder if i was just meant to skip being young and just be an old person, I mean, that is what it already felt like. An old lady that was trapped inside of a six year old's body, but that cannot be that is just crazy.
The moments that actually made me feel like a child are when i was out by the river, which we were not allowed to go to since it was too far from home, but it was the only place that I felt safe with best friends besides my dreams. Oftentimes I would come to the sycamore tree by myself to record my dreams and bury them so no one would see.
One of those memories is when I was digging in the dirt with Zane, my best friend. We were planning on swimming under the cool shade of the trees, but instead we dug in the dirt to find discoveries we could find on our own and claim as ours.
"Come on! You have to get home now!" Zane exclaimed looking out into the distance. He was right,I had to get home or else Mother would not feed me supper.
I was about to get up as the wind whipped through my hair but a flash of silver caught my eye and I bent back down. "Hey Zane! Wait a second!" I yelled excitedly. I dove into the dirt, clawing at it to retrieve this silver piece, but he grabbed my arm hurriedly, trying to drag me towards my house.
I yanked away from his grip. "Ow, Zane, let go please! I said wait a second!" I retorted. I have gone without supper before, this would not be my first time. I wanted these shiny items that glowed in the sunlight.
My nails were filled with dirtyand my hands ached, but I wanted this, I needed this. As i uncovered more of the shiny item, more of it began to shine in the sunlight and I ripped the coin from it burrow. "Oh wow! It is a silver coin! It is so old I do not think anyone could ever use it anymore, maybe it lost its value." I exclaim excitedly to Zane, and I quickly turn back around to dig for more, but Zane grabs my hand and looks me in the eye. "Please Samara, we have to hurry, for your sake lets go." I nodded at him, his deep blue eyes are deep pools of the ocean that I could drown in. "Right, lets go!"
He quickly helped me get to my feet as I slowly jogged, I stuffed the coin into the pocket of my worn out pants and it barley fit.
Zane held my hand, he was the one running like his dinner depended on it, but it did not, his family could never do that to him. I looked behind us and the sun was dancing just above the tops of the trees, I should not be late for dinner, I am just in time.
Zane let go of my hand, looked behind and nodded at me as he ran the opposite direction in attempt to not be spotted by my Mother. I dragged my dirty bare feet into the kitchen opening up the screen door and stepping inside.
"You are late again." My mother said in a disappointing tone, but I could clearly see that I was in fact, not late.
But there was absolutely no point in arguing, she always throws a bigger fit and always wins.
I turn around and ran into my bedroom, slamming the door and pouncing on my bed. Suddenly remembering that Zane was waiting outside my bedroom window for a response to see if i had gotten dinner.
I hop of the little bed that I own and ran over to the window. I looked out to see him standing in the dirt, his face all dirty and his hair a mess, and I shook my head no. A frown covered his face as he turned around to go home.
I thought about a lot of things. About all my times with Zane and all the fun I have had, but also the pain I have endured with Mother. I took the silver coin out of my pocket and jumped back onto my bed, laying on my stomach and playing with the coin, fiddling with it. This is the only thing that i have gotten on my own, this was mine.
I wondered who it could have belonged to, some traveler traveling during ancient times, how many hands and lives it has seen, or what if it is from a different country all together and this coin is their currency along with others instead of dollar bills and paper money.
My Mother opened my bedroom door and walked in, giving me little to no time to hide my precious coin and I quickly dropped my hand to my side, my hand all balled up and in a fist. "It is time to brush your hair, Samara, what is it that you have in your hand?" Mother practically growled. I knew better than to lie and not do what is asked of me, she can get so violent sometimes. I held out my hand and opened it slowly revealing my precious treasure. Mother raised her hand and slapped me across the face as she swiped the coin from my hand. Her hand was imprinted on my face and it glowed a vibrant red, but I knew better than to cry, Mother did not like that.
"Did you steal this?! Great now I have a thief for a daughter! You only get what you come out of this house with! You got it ?!"
I nodded and she stormed out of my room, stomping down the stairs without laying a finger on my hair. I laid frozen in my bed, not wanting to move and inch, I did not want to provoke Mother and further, but when she took my coin, my treasure, I felt that she took a peice of me.
That was the first thing i ever had by myself, without mother getting it for me.
