(STRANGER THINGS SEASON TWO)

SHE WAS A NORMAL GIRL UNTIL CHIEF JIM HOPPER APPEARED AT THE DOOR. A normal girl until the worst of her came pouring back, and suddenly, she couldn't be sure she was the same untarnished soul anymore.

Melanie Lee didn't have any recollection of her time at Hawkins National Laboratory—not at first. But from a single rude awakening that pulled at the very wisps of her mind came a spiraling string of the memories she must've purposefully buried deep. She was Hawkins Lab's own experiment number 009, with a supernatural ability over human memory and pain perception. If memories held the key to the psyche, Mel was the keymaster, and had been used as such for years of experimentation before she was mysteriously granted freedom. How does a teenage girl deal with that?

Short answer is: she doesn't. She suppresses, represses, compresses—the whole deal—until she's nothing but a brittle chrysalis of all that was left in the hollow of her hand. Her love for ballet. So, Mel broke her back for one perfect model. Becoming the greatest example of a ballerina, student, and eldest daughter of an Asian household, fit to make it real to herself that all was well.

She never thought she would be coerced to cross back on this model. Not until her powers became the only force she knew in order to fight against the end of the world, and against all that threatened her brother, his friends, and the bat-swinging babysitter she had never imagined would catch her in a freefall.
