All I could see was darkness. The eerie silence that fell overwhelmed me more than bright stars clouding the sky. Life was pointless, or at least I thought it was. My name is Scarlet, I've been typecast as the quiet girl, who's parents died unexpectedly. The same girl who used to be popular, a spot reserved for the cheer squad, and a hot boyfriend who was the star quarterback. After everything that had happened, Noah just dumped me and left for Brittany, my so called friend. I know, this all sounds like a perfect life, one where the guy always falls for the girl, and the girl makes it to Broadway and gets rich overnight. Trust me, a year ago I thought that my life was a pure replica, but it all changed when he got here.

The first bell rings at West Prep high. Signaling all the junkies to put their blunt away, and do one last mirror check before marching into 5th period late. I know what you're thinking, ohh, it's one of those schools, a prep school. Oh, she's going to be a rich snobby girl, who gets everything she wants. Haha. I wish. Well, we have a few snobby guys who need a serious reality check, but other than that, no. But yes, it is a prep school, and yes, sometimes I want to punch the living daylights out of people every now and then, but it's school. What can I say?

I enter the classroom fully disappointed that Mr. Parks is here. I hate calculus, correction, I despise calculus. I take my seat in the back, a desk empty on my right. This spot just calls me, I can do whatever I want, but I have to listen a little so when I get called on, I don't look stupid. Mr. Parks is at the front of the room rambling on about how his morning was terrible, how some guy took his parking spot and he had to park around back. Please. Do you really think any of us want to be here!?

About halfway through class a guy comes in with a pink pass, backpack on his shoulder, and a grim face. "Ahh, you must be the new student, what's your name" Mr. Parks questioned. Seeing the look on the new guys face, I knew this was going to be interesting. The new guy just stares at him and walks to the desk that's next to mine. Mr. Parks just stands there in shock for a moment. Wow. Just, wow. This new kid has guts.

I nervously tap my pen on the desk. My journal is open to a semi written page, i've made several notes on the new guy. The way he taps his foot, and how I've caught him texting one of his friends. No Scarlet, you are not getting caught up in this guy, nope, no. In fact, I'm not going to even think about him again for the rest of the day. Maybe if I pay attention to Mr. Parks he won't distract me. As if on cue he leans back and flips his hair. I can practically taste his cologne. Fuck. One measly day I ask, and no, Mr. Bad Boy over here decides to make me go nuts!

He laughs a quiet laugh, as if he can read my mind. What even is his name? He just walks into class like; Oh, Mr. Bad Boy here, now if you don't mind, I'm now going to torment this poor girl over here all period. But I won't even acknowledge her because I'm "too cool for school". This time the new kid is smirking and suppressing a laugh. Okay, that's it.

I turn my head to him and prepare for the worst. "What's your name?" He just looks at me and gives me a what's your problem kind of look. "What? You walk in here like you own the school, and then you text for half the period. So what's your problem?" For a second he just looks at me like I'm crazy, but then he surprises me, turning towards me. "I'm Luke." He turns back to his paper and shakes his head. For a moment I'm in shock, what the heck just happened?

I turn towards him again and raise my eyebrows. "Really, that's all you're going to say to me?" He faces me, shrugs and returns to his paper. That's it, I'm going to straighten out this little piece of- Luke looks out of the corner of his eye. "What? Does it bother you that I'm not talking to you" he says smirking. I'm dumbfounded. My cheeks are warm, fuck, I can feel it. "What. No, I just-" He cuts me off and rolls his eyes, "Save it princess, your cheeks say otherwise." Luke laughs and takes a picture of me, he then shows it to me. Wow, it's like two fire hydrants are glued to my cheeks. Is Mr. Parks deaf? We've been hella loud? As if on cue Mr. Parks clears his throat, making Luke and I turn our attention to the front of the room.

"Am I interrupting your conversation in my class?" Mr. Parks says. Before I can apologize Luke pipes in. "Yeah, actually. You are." No! What the fuck are you doing Luke! Mr. Parks' face turns red, he practically screams at us with a snappy response. "Oh really, so you wouldn't mind staying after school Mr. Hayes?" Luke Hayes? If I were not in this situation, I might think the name is cute, but back in reality over here, he is far from being cute.

Luke shoots in another remark. I really need to stop this before things get out of hand. "Actually I do mind. Me and Scarlet were going to go to my place. So no thanks." Luke smirks and leans back in his chair. That's it! "Excuse me!? We never had plans!" Mr. Parks goes to say something else but Luke cuts him off, "Of course we do babe." Luke wraps his arm around me, but I instantly shake his arm off, looking at him with disgust. "Oh, you'll be staying after school too Ms. Rose" says Mr. Parks. This Luke guy is dead meat, he won't be standing on two legs for much longer. He grumbles a cuss under his breath and goes back to texting one of his friends.

After what seemed like 20 minutes I turn back to Luke and glare at him. "So you get me in trouble, don't apologize, then act like an asshole the rest of class. Wow, you have real class." My sarcastic remarks are my favorite things to say in an argument.

Luke sighs and turns towards me, supplying a smirk on his mouth. "You know, you are the one who started talking to me to begin with, in fact you started this conversation too. And no, I wasn't being an asshole, I was texting my friends who are back in New York. Princess, don't get your shorts in a bunch." Luke turned back around signaling he was done talking to me. He owed me one, but he was right. I vowed, that I Scarlet Rose was not going to talk to him for the rest of the day. Even if it killed me, I was going to ignore him.

I was lost in thought about sports tryouts, what should I try-out for? I love football, I played it as a kid throughout my whole life, but I'm a girl and if I tried out for the team, who knows what would happen.

The bell rings and I gather my things up and turn to glance at Luke one more time. He walks out without even noticing me, like I said before Ladies and Gentlemen, real class.

I walk to my locker and throw everything inside. This was my free period, I usually spend it helping out at the library or catching up on sleep. I found my legs carrying me to the sports bulletin board, the sheets of every sport in mankind with empty slots for a couple of names lurked everywhere. I stared at the football sign up, oh, how I wanted to join it with every desire, but what would be of it? How would I be treated? Would they make fun of me? Would they treat me with respect?

My dad had wanted me to play football when I was a kid. We would throw the ball back and forth all the time in my front yard. He would have me run drills all the time, he would sign me up for flag football, tackle football, anything. But when he died, my heart broke into pieces. I was always a daddy's girl, ever since my mother died.

I lost my mother to cancer and my dad to a drunk driver. Oh how I missed my family. My older brother Max, is 8 years older than me, we live together, but he travels so frequently that he's almost never home.

Luke breaks me from my deep thoughts. He's positioned so his body is leaning on the board. He perks up when he sees that I'm looking at him, "Thinking of joining the football team?"

The way Luke said it made me curious as to why he cared. I smiled a half smile and replied, "My dad had wanted me to, I'm thinking about it." Luke smiles and says, "Well I'm sure he would love to come to our first game." My heart breaks a little but I don't show it, I reply, "I'm not sure if I should." Luke takes the pen from my hand and writes my name in beautiful font. He seems uneasy for a moment, I wonder what he's thinking. Luke speaks softly now, "I'll see you at tryouts Scarlet." He walks away leaving me with a million questions.
