It was just the crack of dawn when Serena awoke from her slumber to the sound of a buzzing phone. She was the recipient and the sender? Her lover Angelo. She thought to herself how unusual. She knew he wasn't the type of guy to wake up this early; eagerly she grabbed her phone and read the following message:
Sent 5:59
Love torments the mind
Emotions pour fickly
Water flows but stops
-fin
Initially, thinking nothing much of the message she quickly wrote:
Sent 5:59
Aww. How sweet. I love you <3
She put her phone down and attempted to continue to sleep. Alas she knew that wasn't going to happen. For Serena has trouble sleeping once she's awake. Her mind akin to a tumultuous riptide that only settles once every few days. As she lay down she wondered to herself what the essence of love was.
Is it an emotion like happiness or sadness?
Is it a state of mind like melancholy or optimism?
Or rather was it something completely unknown to her and instead it was a state of being that lied outside the domain of plausible explanations?
Serena questioned who she loved and why she loved the people she did.
She thought about this for a while...
Intuitively she knew that she loved her parents. She felt the same way about her Arabian Mau, Mimi. But when it came to Angelo, her intuition thinned and she was unable to conclusively say that she really loved Angelo. What did he mean to her and her to him?
Did Serena have the right to utter words that she had no understanding of? In the fields of science and mathematics those that utter concepts and words they don't understand themselves are seen as fools. But she wasn't in the fields of science or mathematics. She was in the real world where dysfunctionality ran rampant.
As her mind lingered on the thought she finally grew tired and weary. Her eyes began to dilate and her mind began to rest.
Perhaps the mystery of love is something for humans to not understand. Perhaps it is the search for the answer to the mystery that keeps us so enthralled to find 'the one'. Perhaps it is a reference to our primal desire to survive and love: the concept conceived by the mind to justify lust and sexuality.
Much like the rain on a summer's day, Serena stops thinking and begins to slumber once again.
