I can’t remember the last time I was happy. I know it sounds terribly over dramatic but it’s true. Lately my life has been a long string of unhappy coincidences and I’m just waiting for someone to come along and cut it. So here I am sitting on the park bench when I should be at home asleep or working on homework for some insufferable class just waiting. Not sure who or what I’m waiting for but I intend on finding it before I get up and leave. Maybe I just need to make a conversation with the first handsome stranger who happens to walk by, or maybe out of boredom I’ll start talking to the tree across from my bench that looks a little like something out of the dark forest from Snow White.
The breeze lightly pulls on my hair and bites at my cheeks causing me to shiver. I knew I should have brought a jacket. I slide my phone out of my pocket and check the time. 7:40 pm. The sky was starting to darken and I could feel the weight of the cold front blowing in. the branches of the trees rustle with anticipation and I sit up a little straighter. I shiver again and wrap my arms around myself to try and capture heat. I turn and look around at the street expecting to see a car or two driving by but it’s vacant. Well that’s sort of creepy. The street light flickers on with a dull hum and I turn around so my back is to the light. I tuck a loose strand of auburn hair behind my ear and let out a breath. Come on Harley get it together. I shake my head and pull out my phone again.
An owl lands on the Snow White tree and stares down at me from the twisted branches. My breath catches as it examines me with its wide eyes. Fly away Mr. Owl there is no tootsie pop here for you to lick. If only the creepy owl could hear my thoughts. Mr. Owl hoots and twists its head to the side. A leaf cracks somewhere from deep in the trees and the owls eyes dart in that direction before he pushes off the branch and flies off. Great now I’m all alone.
“You know what they say seeing a white owl means right?” a deep silk like voice says. I jump and my head jerks in the direction of the voice. Sure enough a boy around my age is standing at the far end of the bench watching the direction the owl went. I take a deep breath and try to calm my racing heart.
“Didn’t anyone ever tell you that it’s rude sneak up on people?” I question raising an angry eyebrow at him. The least he could do was apologize for nearly scaring me to death. “And no I don’t.” I quickly add after thinking about it. The boy takes a step closer so I can more clearly make out his features. My jaw almost falls to the ground. He had to be one of the most strikingly attractive boys I had ever seen. He was tall, somewhere around 6 feet if I had to guess, he had dark hair that fell messily into his eyes, which I couldn’t make out the color of in the dark. His tall stature made him look graceful, but when I looked closer he had the bulk of muscles and the black sweater he was wearing fit snuggly on them.
“Well supposedly a white owl is a bad omen and seeing one means you’re going to die or have extremely terrible luck.” With each word he spoke I found my eyes drifting back to his mouth and the way it shaped words effortlessly. Realizing he probably expected me to say something shake the thoughts away and try and form a sentence.
“Isn’t dying the worst luck possible?” I ask not really expecting him to answer. He smirks and shakes his head a little.
“I guess it is… but if I were you I would carry around a rabbit’s foot or a four leaf clover if you happen to come across one. I hear they help in the bad luck department.” He chuckles and I can’t help but laugh along with him. I wonder if he actually believed in all of the urban legends.
“Crap, I’m all out of those.” I snap my fingers for emphasis and smile. I had no idea why I could talk to stranger boy so easily but I couldn’t say I really minded it all too much. It was nice to talk to someone without it ending in a fight.
