Bang! Yet another tremor shook the ocean liner. But I knew something was off. My body began tipping backwards, just as I heard the cry.
"We're sinking! All hands on deck!"
The Captain's booming voice echoed through the ship, causing another wave of panic to spread around the ship. I fell to my knees as another force shook the boat, causing me to slam my body into the metal railing. A white hot pain raced up my left arm. I looked down and saw a peek of white bone, startlingly visible against the muscle and trickling blood.
Gritting my teeth, I took off my shirt and began to wrap it around my injured arm. Something wasn't right. The 'thing' that was hitting the ship- it wasn't like anything I'd ever experienced. There wasn't the clink of metal on metal, and the inevitable explosion that torpedoes bring. And the attacks seemed planned almost, and very strong, so sharks were unlikely to be the cause.
Whatever it was, I didn't like it.
The ship continued to tip at an alarming rate. I struggled to my feet, but it was too late. Adrenaline pumped through my veins as I fell through the air. Cold, clean water flooded my senses. My arms and legs pushed me to the surface. A breath of fresh air filled my lungs before another wave crashed on me. I was tossed like a rag-doll in a washing machine. I ignored the bolts of pain that raced through my arm. It didn't matter anymore. I was fighting nature and I had to win.
I opened my mouth to take a breath, when I felt my leg get tugged. Ducking underwater, I grabbed my ankle where a coarse green vine had wrapped itself around my calves. A scream rushed out of my mouth, a flurry of bubbles escaping. My limbs thrashed. My heart raced. The grey sky was peeking through the water. I could make it. I had to make it.
All my fear pooled together and burst out. A final spurt of energy raced through me. giving a mighty kick, I opened my mouth. The vine yanked me violently. The caustic salt-water burned my tender throat.
I knew this was it.
This was the end.
My vision was framed in black. My whole body was wrapped in vines. I was like a living mummy, but for not much longer. Waves of dizziness and pain rushed through me. I could do it no longer.
I went limp.
My bonds tightened.
I shut my eyes.
And then I felt no more.
