Chapter Four

There had been a power surge followed by a blackout, even the generators were dead. The Order had resorted to waking us up ‘manually’ since the intercoms were down and Noah and Seth had taken up the task of waking me up by breaking into my room, ‘he’s a bit rusty on the art of lock-picking and needed the practice’ Noah had said, I threw my clock at him.

We had all been summoned, everyone right down to the apprentices, the incompetent and the disgraced. Seth and I were currently in all three of those categories. The only time Nathaniel called for everyone was when something big happened, and something big had indeed happened. No one could have predicted what we would see when we reached the clearing, mainly because no one thought it were possible. Up till that point they had just been legends, myths even. Our knowledge on the subject was scarce to say the least, and this only added to the mystery surrounding the beings. Not even the Raven could explain it, and she knew pretty much everything.

There, in the very centre of the clearing near the outskirts of the subburbs was the body of an almost godlike creature; a Hyperion Guardian. The Hyperion Guardians were beings of intense power that were believed to guard the portals between the realms called Hyperion Gates; or at least thats whats what we’d been led to believe, it was also where the extent of our knowledge ended. The Guardians had never been seen my many; the ones who had seen and spoken of them were usually delirious or dying from what had emerged from beyond the gates. No one knew where they came from or how they came to be.

The agents of less importance were tasked with setting up a perimeter around the clearing to prevent any mishaps incase whatever had done this came back and to prevent any curious citizens from straying too close. I shoved my way through the walls of agents until I got to the middle to view the Guardian for myself; like hell I was going to stand around idly as a guardsman. Even lifeless the Guardian was glorious. He was larger than the average human male and donned magnificent white and gold plated armor that spanned across his wide chest and broad shoulders right down to his feet. Along every scale and plate of the armor were markings or runes that were almost transparent; and as time passed they faded further. The area around the Guardian buzzed with dissipating energy. Scorch marks marred the ground and trees in rings; the least intense near the edges while the severely burnt directly under and next to the Guardian. Yet, the Guardian itself seemed in perfect condition; there wasn’t a scratch, dent or burn on him, not even a drop of blood.

“Can... they die? They’re not s’pose to die,” I mumbled with disbelief.

“They’re not s’pose to be real,” Seth stated from beside me as we both gapped at the creature.

Then, from behind us, a familiar voice spoke to everyone and no one at the same time. “The Guardians have always been real, this,” she gestured to the body, the rows of agents parted as she made her way towards the centre. “This shouldn’t be real.” After the Raven spoke, everything was eerily silent.

I stood by her and waited a bit before speaking, “What do you mean, exactly?”

She signed and covered her mouth with her hand as if in shock before it fell to a long, thin chain around her neck; whatever hung at the base of the chain was concealed beneath her coat. Her large brimmed hat casted a long shadow over her face. “The Guardians are real,” she repeated, “and the Guardians are immortal,” she began shaking her head, “This is impossible, it shouldn’t he real. It is not possible.” The Raven became unresponsive after that, she wouldn’t acknowledge anyone. She only stared and the corpse in deep thought. The weight of her words plagued everyone’s thoughts.
