When he heard that Icicle wasn't supposed to be here, he knew he was doomed. He had befriended someone who was supposed to kill him.
So when she was charging at her claws unsheathed, he had two options, defend himself or die.

Sky looked like he was having an intense talk with the statue. Then, Sky disappeared.
All of a sudden, Icicle was stopped. She was still running, but she wasn't moving. "AHHH! What's going on!?"
"I'm going on." Sky materialized out of nowhere.
"Umm, Sky? Did you just turn invisible?"
"Yup."
"Ok," Terra muttered. "My day just keeps getting weirder and weirder."
CRACK.
"Umm. what was that?"
CRACK.
"No no no." Icicle muttered.
"What?" Sky demanded.
"My mother."
