Lorcan often wished he could grow immune to Ophelia's teasing, but it seemed impossible. She always had a new tactic to catch him off guard, leaving him flustered and unsure of how to respond. If it wasn't a flirtatious remark whispered when no one else was listening, it was her genuine compliments during class—comments about his answers or his assignments, which she somehow always managed to see before he could even hand them in.
It felt like he was playing an endless game of chess with her, except she always had the upper hand. No matter how many moves he thought he had figured out, Ophelia seemed to have something unexpected up her sleeve. All Lorcan wanted was to finally call "checkmate," to see her run out of ideas and grow bored of him. That's what he told himself, at least. Deep down, though, there was a small, stubborn part of him that resisted the idea of her leaving him alone completely.
He hated that part of himself, the part that wondered what it might feel like if her attention were directed elsewhere. It was a nagging feeling, one he tried to shove aside, but no matter how much he willed it away, it lingered. So, instead, Lorcan stuck to his plan: shut it out, ignore it, and carry on with his day. For the most part, it worked. But he wasn't sure how much longer he could keep it up.
"Scamander," Ophelia's voice broke through his thoughts as she suddenly appeared in front of him, poking his forehead with her finger. "If you keep scrunching your brows like that, they'll get stuck."
