I opened my eyes slowly, blinded.
From the shutter of the window, the sunlight was brutally penetrating my room; it had to be more or less 7 then... when there was Allie, at that time we were all already awake... I didn't understand anything! The reality in which we live is bizarre, strange, utopian, but I had never felt so disoriented since we had been trapped here; Allie and Will were always present for our community, they would have done anything to maintain order and to ensure a dignified and satisfactory life to all of us, and at that moment they found themselves facing those whom they had helped and guided.
For more than seven months now all the students of the high school of the evanescent town of West Ham had been imprisoned, including myself. At the edge of the city remained nothing but a green wall, an immense forest beyond which there was nothing but the wildest and most violent nature.
I sat on the bed, delicately rubbing my eyes. I turned around and saw him: Sam was lying on the bed, next to me, still asleep. I never thought I could find a person like him here, in this hell that I kept commonly calling home, but I was wrong: Sam was the person who managed to keep me going on, to keep me alive, to encourage me in the moment I needed it the most... He's different! And I am not referring to his disability, which was never a problem for me... I think he's the only one who can understand what it's like to be different in a small reality like ours. There was only one problem that could, however, stand in the way of our happiness: just over a week ago Becca, Sam's best friend, and city council member under Allie's leadership, had given birth to a beautiful little girl named Eden and Sam had recognized her as his daughter; before leaving for the expedition the boy, who at that time was sleeping next to me promised that we would have talked, that we would have been able to find a solution. I was sure he wasn't telling me the truth... a cute little deaf guy with an ambiguous sexual preference, fucks his best friend on a boring fall night and she gets pregnant? The story cracked on all fronts, and if there was even the slightest chance that baby wasn't Sam's, I would have brought it to light.
I got up trying not to move the bed too much, I put the first things I found in the closet and I went down the stairs, with the intention of better understanding what had happened during my absence. Since our parents disappeared and our city was cut off from the world, from the moment Cassandra became the first mayor, we decided it was better to live in communities, using a few houses so we could have wasted less electricity and water: I decided to move in with Allie when I became a member of the Guard, so I could protect her and keep an eye on the administration of the city. Sometimes I'd come back to my house, especially when Sam and I were seeing each other.
I was walking down the lonely block that connected my home to Allie's, where I could find Gordie, the mind of New Ham; he would have been able to explain to me what was happening; Why, all of a sudden, the election was canceled and Lexie and Harry were named as the two new "co-mayors", as they liked to call themselves.
I noticed that some houses in the neighborhood, which were supposed to be empty, had been repopulated by some boys who, according to Allie's instructions, were to be hosted by Harry and the elite of the old city.
Once I got to Allie's house, I wasn't surprised that the Guard wasn't watching the entrance, after all, she wasn't the boss anymore. I went in stealthily... the house seemed quiet, the shutters were down, but the light of the morning could still pierce them, lighting up the living room and the adjacent kitchen: in the dim light, I noticed a dark silhouette sitting at the table in the center of the living room. It took me a few seconds to realize that it was Gordie; he seemed immersed in his thoughts, quite demoralized and had a very tired look:
"Hey..." I mentioned subheading;
"Hey," he answered coldly;
I approached him, sitting down at the table. I leaned my arms on it while I continued keeping my eyes fixed on him, who persisted in mixing the cereal that filled the cup in front of him, without even looking into my eyes;
