chapter six
trouble."So, you guys are werewolves?" Liza asked.
The two groups ended up calming down enough after five minutes of arguing— Liza had to hold back Henry as he continued to argue with Paul, and Sam had to hold his pack back. Liza had quickly recognized Jacob in the group, but his long hair was now cut short to his scalp. He grew another three inches, now towering over her by six inches.
Sam had lead the Sanchez siblings to his house, after introductions were made between the groups. With a promise to behave, he allowed them access to his home with his own mate. Liza really enjoyed Emily's company— she was as sweet as could be, and could easily see her as pack mother to the four pups. The brunette girl tried not to pay attention to the three scars running down her face since it didn't effect her beauty otherwise— but she knew what they were from. She got her confirmation when Sam kissed each one when he returned home. The regret that set in his eyes was enough proof.
"Shapeshifters," Sam corrected. "We're protectors of the tribe."
Henry nodded his head. "And you guys shift because of vampires."
He nodded his head. "It triggers our change. Once a vampire is in the territory, the lucky ones that carry the gene are triggered to change to protect the land."
Paul scoffed from the kitchen table. "Yeah, lucky ones."
Sam ignored his comment as he leaned against the kitchen counter, next to Emily as she continued making lunch for the wolves at the table. "So, what's your story? You obviously shift— but I've never heard of werecats."
"We're not werecats," Liza snorted. "We're dæmons."
All eyes turned towards her in shock, before Embry and Jared busted out into laughter. "Demons— ha! Makes perfect sense to me. Most cats are demons."
Henry rolled his eyes at the childish joke. "Not the demons from Hell," he snapped, ignoring Liza's chuckle beside him. "Dæmons. We exist to protect, not destroy."
"You lot change because of vampires, we change to protect our mates," Liza explained. "The only difference is that our first phase is when we hit puberty. We stop aging at the age of eighteen."
"You phase so young?" Emily asked. She rested her hand on top of her chest in worry. She ran her eyes over the boys at the table. She couldn't imagine them turning at only the age of twelve— it wouldn't be fair to risk their life so young.
