[Dandelion]
A man stood next to Mother. My jaw tightened. He looked at me, and I glared back at his eyes: amber, near molten gold. They questioned me and ridiculed me, and yet the man had not said a single word.
"Mother, who is this?" I snapped each word out in measured syllables, my tongue biting down to refrain myself from cussing.
"Dandy, this is Hisoka Morrow. He was our neighbor from long ago. You don't remember since he left when you were just a babe, but he was a very kind young man back then."
I stepped closer and paled. His scent! This was the man from the market... a kind young man my ass. If I focused on his scent, beneath the bubblegum and fruits, blood and mayhem beckoned to me. I took a step towards him and placed myself between the strange man and Mother.
"Well, if he's such a kind gentleman... Maybe he should serve us some tea." I said and sat down in the seat besides Mother. Whomever Hisoka was, he's in my house and I'll be damned if I lower my head to him.
"Dandelion, is this how we treat guests?" Mother said. She raised her eyebrows and pointed towards the kitchen.
I gave her a slight scowl - just enough so that it could be mistaken for a wobbly lip - and stepped past Hisoka to enter the Kitchen. I tensed as his lips curled in the corner of my eye. The moment passed, and I found myself stirring the tea leaves in the kitchen.
A draft of jasmine blows over me and I relaxed my stance. If Mother knows him, he can't be a bad person. Perhaps today in the Market was an isolated incident. I shouldn't judge him so harshly on a first impression. And after all, he did save me.
I waltzed into the courtyard to the sound of Hisoka laughing - the sound vibrated through my body. The leaves on our maple trees shook and I realized that his nen itself laughed. It bounced like rubber, full of life.
"Mother... Mr.Morrow." I poured their tea, careful to strain the leaves and keep it in the pot.
After, I retreated to the corner of the yard and started my daily reading - the news of Meteor City changed by the hour, but the newspaper only came twice a day and we could not afford any electronics. So, the Daily Metro sufficed. I picked up the evening edition.
I flipped through the pages and could not find any news on the attack in the market square. I furrowed my brows and tried my best not to listen in on Mother's conversation - a rude trait, she always said - but following her rules was not my strong suit.
" -- and they're going after the Clan? You're sure of it?" Mother said.
"Well, I just heard rumors here and there... But if someone's paying good money, you know they will act on it."
"So they will."
"I came to warn you, Beryl. You should leave while you can. They've already assassinated a couple of -- " Hisoka cut himself off. He frowned and turned to look at me.
I lowered my eyes in measured time. Too quick or slow and it'll be obvious that I was listening in. My eyes gazed around the dusk sky before meeting his with a quizzical glance. He dropped his gaze and turned back towards Mother.
"Is she...?"
Mother shook her head.
"No. Dandy will be safe... I think it's time for her to be sent away. I still have some connections."
Hisoka shrugged. "If that's what you think is best."
He pulled a couple photographs out and held them to Mother. I strained my neck, but could only catch the glimpse of one of them - a man with raven black hair and a cross on his forehead. I shuddered.
"Keep your eyes peeled." Hisoka whispered as he tucked the photos into Mother's apron.
"And you. Keep an eye on Dandelion. She's become more important to me than the Clan. I am her only family now."
Hisoka smiled a half-smile and nodded. "Already ahead of you. Though, I can't promise anything. She has a knack for wandering into places at the wrong time."
I closed the newspaper I'm reading with a flourish and cleared my throat.
"Mother, I think it's past time that Mr.Morrow should return home... Or will he require accommodations here?"
Hisoka jumped up and touched his toes. He finished his tea while stretching and laughed.
"I'll head out then. Stay safe, Beryl." He looked towards me. "Nice to meet you, Dandelion."
I returned a polite nod. If only for Mother's sake, I should try and make less enemies. "Yes."
Mother's gaze lingered on his back as he left. I stared at the tea leaves he left in his cup - my studies in divination must have gone wrong somewhere. The message left there had to be wrong.
Salvation?
