“MAN? Wake up!” he said shaking her unconscious sleep. She opened her eyes that bright light refraction of the nearest car stroke her face.
“It’s almost 20 minutes when we got here. It’s so embarrassing that you are the host of the program. You are I mean, we are late,” he said brushing his hair. She assumed that she offended him for being an extender closed eyes.
She get up from the car. She push the door tight and walk ahead through the sidewalk. She took a deep breath trying to brainwash her failed self before reaching into the venue, she passed the 10 feet wooden gate. Walking and feeling home is like summarizing all the moments of her childhood years as she saw the rusted seesaw that she remembered when her brother was on sitting and he get up then she fell. It seems that grandma’s house is a medium size of a two-storey house that makes it as a timeless Filipino style.
She stepped on her grandma’s living room that she saw her grandpa’s paintings hanging on the wall. She saw the painting that is new to my eyes.
“OMG! Are they kidding?” she reacted. This painting is her painting when she was in 9 years old. It is not only her who painted these Hands. They were two, it’s just the name has been wrinkled but her name and the date are clear.
She felt someone is holding her wrist and runs that makes her move carefully with her shoes that if she wouldn’t, those might be broken. The girl is wearing a red shirt that was tucked in her bell-bottom jeans, she thought 1970‟s own it. It reminds her of Roselle who has an effort of tucking in shirts in every jeans or skirt, she loves it. Her brownish skin is smooth and she is lower than me 3 ft.
“Mom, hurry up, they are waiting for the host,” Roselle said catching her breath.
“Yeah!” Lady agreed. Back when she was in Grade 3, she met her that she is a Grade 1 timid girl that all she handled is a doll. It’s the time when she saw her bowed head sitting on the ground, she stepped on her blue skirt. She looked at her flowing tears like a river. My body is a doll, I don’t have soul. “I’m sorry,” Lady begged her million times with her million cries.
“Can you fix my doll?” she asked crying loud. She is so adorable that her sparkling eyes are catching Lady’s attention.
“Okay! I’m going to fi-fix it. Just don’t cry out loud,” she responded. She sat fixing the pieces of her doll.
“Here you go! Your doll has been fixed,” Lady said.
“Thank you, Mommy,” Roselle said smiling to her. Lady walked away from her, Roselle hugged her behind her back. Even though Roselle is now 15 yrs. old, she acts as her baby.
She can see the tent touched by the mild wind dancing above the crowd sitting. There are lots of delicious foods prepared by catering service. As we approach on the way to the classy and vinyl embellished stage, some people stared suspicious on us.
“Break a leg,” she wished.
“Thank you,” Lady replied hugging her.
She is not yet prepared. Her legs are melting while walking through the center of stage. She wipes her sweat hands on her skirt. On the backside, there were guests sitting behind that she doesn’t want to see them because she keeps them waiting. She smiled. She grabbed the microphone and make it a handheld. She tapped the top of it and everyone laughed. She counts in her mind unless they stop she can start speaking. The noise minimizes.
“Good morning to all of you! I welcome you all to the Reunion of our loving Grandma. My name is Lady Man Sumpaan, your host for today. The love of our Grandma is a great treasure to celebrate today in her services to others that helped everyone of us,” she opened.
Can I go to bathroom? My urinary bladder is very full and I don’t feel comfortable in hosting.
“May I call on Hon. Lady Jane V. Sumpaan , our grandma, to lead a prayer and express her opening remarks to this celebration.”
Everyone stand up silent except for the children below 6 years old they’re giggling, playing and even crying. Grandma came out from the stage with her dyed brown haired pixie cut wearing her comfy yellow sweater over her white dress and her pumps that is a beautiful look. Her kindness and beauty is fabricated within herself that she is loved by many. She is now a 75 years old but her legs are bulletproof. Lady gave her a kiss on the cheek and a hug to be cherish. The crew assisted her in front of the stage and put the platform to increase her height and speak on microphone. Why do as we aged we were getting smaller?
They prayed so lovingly with God until the Trinitarian Formula. She excused herself running into the bathroom as fast as she can.
“Whoa!” she shouted when she stepped on his shoelace that she didn’t recognize. “Hey, Miss. Wacha-outta!”
That voice shuttered her mind. How the voice so weird. But she needs to pee first. As she get in to the pastel pink bathroom there were two women retouching in front of the mirror. She is in a hurry to get in to the third column of toilet and she is peeing.
“I know that Antique Shop that runs on their blood is the matter of this event,” the voice said.
“What? The old lady should sell that thing because it’s not fit anymore in our generation we find ourselves now innovation not a second hand, technology runs now on everyone’s blood,” the other one said. How could they stab my grandma? My hands already burnt from my boiling mind. She flushed the toilet. She kicked the door.
“You, how do you know?” she shouted.
They’ve gone, she hates gossips especially striking her loved ones dignity. It can’t get out of her mind that it suffocates her expectation in this party. She went back to the event that she saw everyone was shocked.
“Excuse me, did I miss something?” she asked the waiter holding the tray glasses of wine and get one.
“She said that the Antique Shop is officially closed,” he said. She drunk but those liquid release by her nerve.
What an effort? How do grandma close that memorable thing that they built together with her Grandpa? Lady returned straight with her head down.
“May we call on Romy Ren Todo,” the name’s familiar. He was her long-time friend.
