Chapter Six

That night, Mabel never slept.

The next morning, she sat in her friend's bed and watched the sun rise, not being able to stop thinking about what had happened just hours ago. She couldn't believe it- she had met the alpha of the Denali Pack? Her? Her entire life revolved around going unnoticed and being discreet. Meeting her favorite alpha was like if somebody else met Bill Gates.

The sun had just reached the rim of her scalp, and she played a little game in her head to see how long it would take the light to reach her eyes and make her look away. The sight of such a majestic landscape unfolded before her made her hope it would take a while.

The Denali Pack wasn't her favorite pack just because of some letters she had read from their alpha- it also had something to do with the heart-breaking beauty of the Alaskan terrain. Mabel had been to every state, province, sector, territory, and whatever was left of North America. But nothing spoke to her like the strong surroundings of the Denali National Reserve.

She watched the sunlight crawl its way up the many trees, rocks, mountainsides, and streams before it signaled her to make herself useful. She also crawled her way out of bed and started making breakfast for the family she was staying with.

Her work for the packs usually ended with her staying at people's houses because it was impossible to stay still for more than three days at a time. Fortunately enough for her, she made a friend here during her first few months on the job, and secured a house to stay in whenever she was around.

Lu Chellian was one of her closest friends, if you could call someone who you see maybe five times a year a friend. Lu had seen Mabel set up a tent for herself a few years back and took pity on the poor traveler, offering her a place to stay. Mabel refused to be a "burden" (something that she could never be, according to Lu) and continued to sleep in her tent. In the morning, she woke to Lu shoving a hot breakfast into her tent and pulling her out to enjoy it with her family. Mabel had another day before she needed to be anywhere, so she spent it exploring the pack lands with Lu, and they became quick friends.

As Mabel was gathering the ingredients to bring to the fire, Lu sprung out of her room and did a weird little run over to Mabel.

"What are we making today? Human food is so weird. We had to look so hard for the plants you wanted, and it took forever to figure out where to get chicken eggs without going to one of your stores."

Mabel giggled at her excited face. Lu had huge, curly, dark hair that went in all directions when she woke up, and her face was almost red from her giddiness. Her eyes were so brown they were basically black, and as the white of her eye met the black, it looked like a deep purple. She was slender and tall, just like most werewolves in their human forms, and had so much energy that Mabel normal around her.

"Where did you get the eggs if not in a store? I just assumed you would have gone to one in spite of all the anti-human propaganda you guys never stop talking about."

Lu scrunched her strong nose, "Nope, I don't think I'll ever go into a store. It's so congested and there's so many fake smells that I don't know what to pay attention to. One time, Maria went to a store just to see what it was like, and I had to shove her into the stream so that I wouldn't throw up."

Mabel's mouth dropped open, "No you didn't! Oh my gosh, what did she do when you did that? I think I would have murdered you"

"I think she thanked me, "Lu shot back, proud. "Either I was going to do it, or she was. It was so disorienting to be around so many smells that getting shoved into the water cleared her senses back up. And it was a good reminder to the locals that getting involved in human affairs never ends well," she remarked, sending a fake disgusted look mabel's way.
