Wake Up Shikha

1. Mother's Pet- Shikha

A middle-aged woman entered a dimly-lit room where a teenage girl was fast asleep, cuddling her plump teddy with pillows surrounding her slender yet beautiful form. The woman smiled seeing her daughter, how serene she looked while asleep completely opposite to her bubbly self. She proceeded to wake her dear daughter from her beautiful slumber as it was time for her college, even though she didn't wish to see her daughter's peaceful slumber getting disturbed, she didn't want her daughter to run late for college.

She walked to the bed and gently nudged her daughter, calling out to her "Shikha, It's getting late for college darling wake up and get ready quickly, it is already 8.30 am and your bus will be outside the block in 45 minutes!!" The maiden, however, didn't budge, instead, a sweet voice drifted to her mother's ears "Kavitha please...just 10 more minutes, I was just about to see my prince-charming and you just came and disrupted my beautiful dream!! If you let me sleep for a bit longer, I may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of him in the 10 minutes" saying so, she pulled her covers towards her head and disappeared underneath.

Mrs. Kavitha Srinivasan sighed in defeat, this was expected because this is what happens every day, her dear active daughter who can't sit in one place becomes unbelievably lazy when it comes to waking up early in the morning. She knew what was to be done, she walked back to the kitchen and scooped Shikha's favorite breakfast- Pongal in a plate, picked up the teddy mug filled with coffee and proceeded to wake the princess of the house...her favourite way, through food.

Shikha slowly rose from the bed, sniffing the air, trying to find the source of her favourite smell. With her eyes closed as she was sniffing like a puppy, which made her mother giggle who was rotating the plate and mug to prevent her daughter from reaching it, every time Shikha would almost reach the destination, the plate would be moved, annoying Shikha, but making Kavitha laugh looking at the cute form of her daughter half-asleep but still trying to catch the whiff of the food.

Finally giving up this cat and mouse chase with the plate, Shikha forced open her eyes and yanked the plate from her mother's hand. "See!! I knew it was my favourite Pongal" she muttered. She immediately was about to delve into it but down came her mother's free hand to cover her mouth just before the morsel of Pongal entered.

Then came Kavitha's stern voice "Shikha!! You haven't brushed and bathed yet, you will only get your food once you do that". Shikha tried to come up with a lame excuse she said; " But amma it will become cold by the time I finish bathing, can I just quickly brush and eat?". Kavitha knew her daughter will come up with something like this and had a reply ready "Oh it's fine Shikha, if you are quick the Pongal will still stay warm, in any case, we have a microwave I will reheat it for you if it turns cold, now hurry and get ready" saying so she pulled back the plate laden with food and took it with the mug back to the dining room to place it on the table. "It shall wait here for Shikha," she thought smiling..as she imagined the furious yet defeated form of her daughter who had rushed to the bathroom fearing her Pongal might turn cold.
