Amanda Martin used to live a normal life. She rose from bed, ate, went to school, returned home, did homework, studied, and acted like a regular human all throughout her child. She was convinced of her humanity and ignored all ideas of mythical creatures. Those only exist in stories, she though. Amanda kept this idea all the way into adulthood, until her daughter was born.
Caroline (Carrie) Martin was a beautiful baby girl. She had light blonde hair and deep brown eyes. She had gotten her hair from her father and her eyes from her mother. Throughout the first day of birth, Carrie slept, ate, and pooped like a normal child. Until, upon returning home from the hospital a day or two later, Amanda put Carrie into the sink for a bath.
Carrie had sprouted a tail upon entrance in the water, a mermaid tail. Carrie flapped her tail in the water, splashing everywhere and hysterically laughing. Her skin turned slimy and Amanda lost her grip, dropping poor little Carrie in the water. Amanda let out a short shriek and pulled her daughter from the water, but her daughter was not scared. Carrie did not gasp for breath and cry, as most normal babies would when submerged in water. Carrie stared at her mother, and Amanda stared back in shock. Her daughter was a mermaid.
That day Amanda started to believe. She disregarded every thought she had learned about magical creatures. She knew they were real. Later that day, she bought a small pool for her daughter to splash in. Amanda did not know how a 3 day old could be so active. What she also did not know is how she could give birth to a mermaid. Her husband was no merman. She had gone to the beach with him two summers before Carrie was born. She received her answer upon bedtime. A man spoke to her in her dreams, saying how Amanda was the chosen woman to bring creatures into the world. Amanda was strong and knew where her duties lie. Mythical creatures were slowly becoming extinct, and the man knew that Amanda would be the one to help repopulate. Amanda was not the only woman, no, she was one of many. She would only give birth to mythical creatures when she was impregnated, as the man told her in her dream.
Over the next few years, Amanda gave birth to two more children: Lauren and Mike. Lauren had beauty beyond compare. Her hair was a flowing chocolate brown and her eyes were a warm hazel. She could make any man fall in love with her just by smiling. But she also had a characteristic that was far more unique than her beauty. She was a phoenix. When she commanded herself, she would sprout wings and burst into flame. She could burn entire cities to the ground by flying over them. But she did not. Lauren wanted to be a normal human, but knew she could not. When she was home alone (she was about 6 at the time) her back hurt terribly. She fell on the ground and sprouted phoenix wings and burned her home to the ground. Amanda soon bought a new house on a private beach, so Carrie could swim and Lauren could fly (as a bird, she always had a need to fly).
Mike was a light elf. His eyes were yellow and his ears pointed. He wore brown contacts and covered his ears with a hat when he was in the human world. Unlike his sisters, Mike felt no joy in having powers. He felt joy in the world, as light elves found. He was content with just living. Although, when he did have the chance, he took off his hat and contacts.
Many years have passed since the Martin children have found out of their special abilities. Amanda’s husband passed away in a car accident when Carrie was 3, Lauren was 2, and Mike was one. Amanda would have no more children, but she was content. She was happy with her children and her duty to raise them into fine and powerful mythical creatures.
