"Hey, Will." I purred, twisting my hair with my index finger and leaning against his locker in what I hoped was a seductive manner.
"Hi, Julia." He said absentmindedly, as if he had no idea how hot he was. He really didn't seem to notice any of the girls that flokingly followed him around with hearts in their eyes.
It was just before first period, so I had him to myself for a few minutes before they came along. "Um, Julia?" He asked, still not looking at me, but instead fiddling with his headphones.
"Yes?" I bit my lip a little. That had always gotten boys to stare in a loving manner before, but not even a glance from Will. I don't think he was trying to be rude, he simply had ADHD, and really had no idea when you were flirting with him, but we could work over that.
He finally looked up at me. "Um." He said, nervously scratching the back of his neck, "You're standing in front of my locker."
"Oh, right," I said, but didn't move. Fine. So this is how he wanted to play the game.
"Listen, I really need to get to class." He fiddled with his headphones more. "And my books are in there..."
"Yes..." I was waiting for him to outright say it. I was not going to make this easy for him.
"Julia, can you please shift your body a few inches to the right?" He asked, biting his lip in that adorable way. He always does that when he's nervous.
I smiled victoriously and couldn't hide my look of satisfaction from him, complying and leaning onto the locker right beside his. He put his headphones in and opened the locker door, shuffling around for something.
"So, Will," I said, "when are you going to ask me out?"
He didn't seem to hear me, so I went to pull his headphone out when I caught sight of the thing he was holding tightly in his fist. I was some sort of bracelet, with the inscription
Te quiero, cariño. In big silver letters.
"What the hell is this?" I demanded, yanking on the headphone cord. He glanced at me with a look of surprise. "What. The. Hell. Is. This?" I demanded again.
"Oh, Julia," He said, looking down at his fist in awe, as if he had instinctively taken it out of his pocket and had no recollection of the incident. "I told you I was dating someone."
"What does it say?" I half-yelled, collecting stares from passers-by.
"I love you, Sunshine." He whispered, his cheeks getting slightly pink. There were a few gasps, and I looked around. We had gathered quite the crowd, and my claim on Will was no secret.
"SUNSHINE?" I was shaking. "Who the hell is she?"
"I-" He began, but was interrupted before he could get another word out.
"Will." It was UglyBeth. "You need to see this." She leaned in and whispered something into his ear, and his look went from embarrassed, to surprised, to horrified.
"Is it her?" I screamed. Then I turned on Annabeth. "Is he your 'Sunshine,' UglyBeth?" Everyone whispered the name UglyBeth in secretive corners, but no one had ever screamed it in her face before. There were amazed whispers. She looked like she had just swallowed a lemon, and I took deep satisfaction from it. "You don't deserve him!" I shouted at her.
Will calmed me down with both hands on my shoulders. "Julia, no. She's not my girlfriend. Listen, you're suffering from shock. You need to sit down and take a deep breath. I need to go." He addressed the crowd. "Don't swarm her. There's something important I need to do." And took off, UglyBeth at his heels. I chased after them, pushing the crowd aside. He was not going to escape my sight. I would chase him until I found that girlfriend of his.
I would destroy her.
He halted on the pavement of the school's parking lot, just in time to see a big black car pull up. It was unlike anything I had ever seen. It had silver paint lining the edges, making it look like the car was covered in streaks of silver fire. It pulled into the lot so fast that it was all I could to avoid being run over.
The crowd had followed us, and excessively gained more members. They gasped at the car. One kid shouted something about how expensive it was, and how much money a kind of paint job like that would take. From the driver's side, a man stepped out and pulled open the door for a guy inside. Not only was he super-rich, but he had his own private driver too? If I got with this guy... maybe I would have the means to make Will jealous. He'd realize that we belong together.
I looked closer. The driver looked kind of... dead?
The boy stepped out. He had black hair and a lean frame. He had huge shadows under his eyes. He seemed to be a bit younger than me, but it was fine. I have always wanted an emo boyfriend, even if it was only to make Will jealous. He glared at the crowd before his eyes rested on Will, and he smiled. The smile completely changed his face. Instead of being imposing and kind of scary, instead of looking like he had just fought a war, he seemed... inviting. Kind.
They ran towards each other, the dark-haired boy limping slightly, and collided in the middle, embracing each other fiercely.
So they were.... friends? This would make operation make-Will-jealous easier.
Then I saw something that infuriated me so much that I saw red. The boy broke from the hug, and grabbed Will by the collar of his shirt, pulling Will's lips towards his and kissing him passionately. Will murmured the name 'Nico' and kissed back... he probably wasn't in his right mind. He couldn't want this.
My legs moved by themselves, and before I could stop myself, I pushed Will back from the boy. Shielding his body with mine. The boy-Nico, I assume- looked surprised and angry. "Don't touch him!" I seethed. "Will isn't gay, you fag!" Before I could say anything more, a fist flew out of nowhere and punched me right in the face, and suddenly, I was on the ground, too dazed to move. The face of UglyBeth swam into my vision. She looked angry. Beyond angry. Enraged. She reared up her fist to hit me again, and I curled up into a ball, crying out in anticipation of the blow, when a hand caught hers.
Will. His face was blurry, but I would always recognize my knight in shining armor. I knew he would always protect me. He stood over me, but instead of reaching down a hand to help me up, he leaned down until his nose was almost touching mine, his beautiful blue eyes staring seep into my own.
"That 'fag'" He hissed angrily, "Happens to be the love of my life. He's my sunshine. And if you ever call him that again, I will punch you in the face before Annabeth even gets the chance to think about it. I would say it was a pleasure, but it wasn't. I hope I never see you again in my life, and if I do, you had better watch out." He laced his fingers with Nico's and pulled him along.
The crowd gasped. The queen had been dethroned. This was the first time I had ever been rejected, and I would never live it down.
