The crisp smell in the air was reminder of the human cruelty that exists, quietly slipped into the corners of every beautiful thing in this world at every turn.
Another murder had occurred. She was already present at the crime scene when Dong Baek had arrived. They had been the historical team that had caught the notorious serial killer nicknamed Eraser. Though that case was wrapped up for the public, it's haunting effects still lingered in the lives of those relentless to catch such criminals.
She was there with hardly few hours of sleep, wearing his long coat. He remembered how he had draped his coat on her last night while she had fallen asleep while working.
As soon as Sun Mi caught his eye, she came forward to him, like a magnet is pulled towards an iron surface.
"Did you get enough sleep last night?" She shot him with an interrogative question as soon as she was within his audible range.
"Speak for yourself Ms" He shot back, though with concern-filled voice, gaze lingering upon the eyebags under his partner's eyes. She had officially prohibited him from using memory scan a long time ago. He went inside the house on the crime location to gather clues. As he entered the kitchen his eyes fell upon a green cup and his mind went down memory lane.
*********flashback**********************
A pair of hands were handing him a green cup, "Please drink this tea up Dong Baek, it would help you."
"Everyone I love, leaves, leaves me."
"shh it would all be okay soon," she gulped and continued, "and they are in a better place now, it's ok don't hold back your tears." she said as she collected him inside a reluctant and tender hug.She had insisted to stay with him to look after him after the death of captain, that too being occurred in front of his eyes.
Every night she made him tea and every night he wondered of all the ways this would go wrong, how she'll leave too one day. It took him weeks to come to term with the chaos and tragedy that had occurred. But she stayed, she never grew tired of him unlike all his fears.
He came to know that she wasn't always as strong as she portrayed either. One night he came across her fervently saying a prayer
sitting on floor with her back against the bed in her room
Angel of the lord
My guardian dear
To whom His love commits me here
Ever this day be at my side
To light and guard
To rule and guide
AmenHe slowly stepped into the room after she had finished saying the prayer
and coming beside her softly uttered "Noona"
"I saw a nightmare, you...you were...." she swallowed.
"it's ok I'm still here, right beside you," he assured her caressing her head as it comfortably settled on his shoulder, her silent tears making his shirt wet. He then watched funny videos on youtube with her all night long, he would do anything to make her feel relaxed and comfortable, not leaving her side until he was sure she would be ok alone.Despite being two of the bravest detectives they could absolutely not watch horror movies. Sun Mi always used to turn to channels focused on documentaries while Dong Baek surprisingly was a romcom fan, it was a major stress reliever he told her upon inquiry once. Sun Mi was a bit taken aback when she had one day out of curiosity tuned into a romcom and found herself being pleasantly indulged in it. And it was a good stress reliever as Dong Baek had mentioned, the only concerning thing being when the male lead she found absolutely cute would slightly resemble Dong Baek and in moments like those she would want to go to an eye doctor or a therapist for seeing that similarity.
Dong Baek binge watched the entire episodes of Weightlifting fairy with Sun Mi, eventhough he had already watched it previously, just because she had insisted. They slowly blended into each others lives very naturally, becoming habituated with each others existence. Meals felt incomplete and lacking without one another, he called her to cases he had already figured out and solved, making some terrible excuse when his colleagues would say there was no reason to call her,
She would have more trouble than usual in opening a tight jar/can or fixing a light bulb in her room by herself.
They would have an extra movie ticket because their "friend" would have cancelled at the last moment and they couldn't think of anyone else or better to go watch them with other than their partner in crime aka each other. They covered all the distance between them until there were no gaps left to be filled.
********************************end of flashback***************
"Earth to Dong Baek" her voice broke his trip to memory lane and he was back to present.
"The forensics have already confirmed the DNA and it belonged to former governor's son. The police has been dispatched to arrest him now. Let's go home."
"Can we stop by at a cafe on the way?"
"Sure.""So what were you thinking back there"
"Nothing, just memories Noona" he said smiling and she smiled back
"Memories of you, and me, memories of us, Noona" he finished the sentence, a vivid blush appearing on Sun Mi's cheeks. They were a competitive pair, there was no way she was going to allow herself to look like a tomato alone.
"Remember Dong Baek once you asked me why were you here, if you were only here to face pain and suffering? I have your answer now. Dong Baek you were made for great things, for fighting injustice and putting criminals in their right places, for bringing light into the world, for being awesome, for cheering on your favorite football team so loudly in the stadium, for being a wonderful and smart detective, for discussing kdrama theories with me and other people so very passionately, for looking absolutely ethereal in the early hours of morning,
And most importantly, for loving me whole heartedly." she smiled back while bringing her coffee mug to her lips.
Dong Baek didn't say a word but his eyes conveyed every feeling he had for this lady sitting opposite to him with eye smile. He was so grateful for those pair of eyes staring back at him that sometimes looked so concerned while he was in danger, sometimes were filled with fear while chasing a murderer and that sometimes looked so endearingly at him that he felt everything else melting away.
With a smirk Dong Baek admitted how jealous he was right now of that coffee mug his beloved noona was holding and she couldn't help but allow a smile to form as her lips touched the mug's brim.
