Drops of water ran down the dusted windows, getting caught along the edges. I watched the heavy rains turn the roads to mud and the grass fields to shallow ponds.
The soldier behind me cursed under her breath, "It's really coming down. I hope they'll get back okay."
Me too... What if Levi didn't come back? Then what would I do?
"Hey, kiddo, let's head to the kitchen, huh? It's getting pretty late." Hange offered.
I shook my head and continued to stare out the window. I have to wait, I can't leave. What if they get back while I'm not here?
Levi said they'd be gone for 5 days and it's been 7, I had been counting, they should be back any second now.
But what if they don't come back?
"Listen, kid, it's late. They probably stopped somewhere for the night, they won't get here until morning."
I sighed, "Levi promised, 5 days."
Hange had sighed as well, "Sometimes promises don't always work out."
I didn't believe her. Levi had never broken a promise, not ever.
The loud bells scare me from my thoughts; the gate is opening; the Survey Corps is back!
I watch outside eagerly, waiting to see or hear their horses or shouts of victory, but there's nothing like that.
The soldiers return, their capes drawn and heads down. The group is smaller, but I can't pick out any faces. Several horses pull covered carts, I can see some hands and feet poking out from under the canopies.
Hange leaves me and runs outside, I follow her, not bothering to put on a coat or shoes.
The soldiers' faces are bland and sunken in under their hoods. I see Erwin get off his horse and I run over to him.
"Where's Levi?" I ask him as he kneels down to meet my eyes.
He tips his hood back, allowing me to see his face. "He's here."
I study his face, trying to get a better answer. His lips are set in a straight line, dark circles line up underneath his eyes and his face is splattered with blood and dirt.
"Where is he?" I ask again.
Erwin shakes his head, "He got hurt, but he's alive. Go inside, you need to go to bed."
"Wait!" I shout at him, soldiers weave their ways around us. "I want to see him first!"
He shakes his head again, "You can't (y/n), I'm sorry."
"Why not?"
"Because he doesn't want to see you," Erwin says, his voice getting deeper. The words he speaks don't match how his mouth is moving.
"He's done with you, he regrets taking care of you. He wishes he would've left you with your family."
"You're alone, (y/n)."
The surrounding soldiers move in closer, crowding together and around me. Their voices ring through my head, "You're alone. You're alone. You're alone."
The rain beats down faster and harder, flooding the air. The water rises up around me and everything gets darker and darker.
"You're alone. You're alone. You're alone."
