"Sera! Come on, sleepyhead! It's time to get up before we're late," Emma yells at me, shaking me rather violently.

I groan, "Dear lord, Emma. For someone who's special ability is to bring peace to people's minds, you really know how to disrupt it as well."

"It's part of the job, mate," She jokes, giggling as she turns away from me and towards a door that I hadn't noticed before. "Here's the bathroom, by the way, we share it with the girls next door."

I sigh and sit up, shaking my head at her, "That's good cause I've really been needing to go since last night." I rush into the bathroom to see two stalls, a shower, and two sinks. I came back out after and got dressed quickly.

Emma was already dressed and waiting for me, "Don't forget your key, just in case you come back without me."

I nod and grab my key, slipping it into my pocket before stepping out the door with her.

Just as we walk out a tall, skinny girl bumps into Emma rather aggressively as she passes by, laughing and turning around to say, "Freak, watch where you're going."

I frown, "You purposely ran into her, you cunt."

The girl whips around to look at me, "You must be new here. So let me give you a few pointers." She walks up close enough to where I can smell her rancid breath, "Don't mess with me, or you'll be put through so much hell you'll be crying for daddy."

The anger hit me like a bullet train, "You better get you and your nasty breath out of my face before I make you or I won't be the one crying."

"You couldn't do anything, you probably can't even control your powers yet," She says with a laugh.

I glare at her, "I said back up."

"I don't have to listen to anything you say," She remarks but continues to back up a few steps, her smug look turning into confusion.

Emma leans over to me, and whispers, "Come on, let's just go. It's fine. Lauren's not worth the trouble."

She grabs my arm and I feel the anger wash away as she drags me down the hallway. I look back to see the girl just staring at us.

"I thought you read minds, not controlled them," Emma says, pulling me into a corner.

I furrow my brows, "Well, couldn't I do both?"

"No, it's impossible. Every witch and wizard gets one power, that's how it works," She says in a hushed tone.

I shake my head, "Maybe she was just messing with us then, don't worry about it."

Emma gives me a weird look. "Something is definitely off, we just don't know what it is yet."

"Come on, we don't know that, Em," I reason. "Let's just get to orientation, ok?"

She nods and starts walking. I follow her and take another look around as we walk to a big ballroom looking area, filled with folding chairs and a large podium in the center. Emma leads me to a section of chairs labeled "grade nine".

"We sit in this section," she says taking a seat. "The orientation will begin in a few minutes."

I sit next to her as other students started flooding in. A familiar blue-eyed boy takes a seat on the other side of Emma.

Finn turns to Emma and smiles, "Hey, Em. Ready for another year of driving our teachers absolutely crazy?"

"You bet," she says with a laugh. "This is Sera Jacobs, she's my new roommate."

He looks at me and my heart beats a little faster, "It's nice to meet you Sera. I've read about your family in the school archives. You're very lucky to be here, it's become very exclusive since the seventh grade. Now there are only about a hundred kids in each grade. We had trouble with some pretty bad students. Almost destroyed our science wing."
