Maybe it was because he had always been alone since his youth, or maybe it was just the way he was made, but Sesshomaru enjoyed his own company the most. He knew that this was one of the few things that would never change in him. Not that it bothered him or anything. He was the Sesshomaru. No one deserved him or his time. It was not arrogance, just plain facts.

But if he were to find someone worthy of his time and words, it would be someone strong, intelligent, and quiet. None of this matched the girl he met today. For one thing, she didn't seem to know about herself. Knowing thyself is more important than knowing about the enemy. Next, she couldn't seem to have the ability to take care of herself, forget protecting. Finally, the few words that transpired between them would be enough for him, Sesshomaru, to understand that she would be a noisy one. Not someone he would keep around, Rin excluded.

Why was he thinking about her now? He glared into the horizon. They had business to get down to.

The demon they had been searching for had been nowhere to be found. They had gone through most of the villages in the Northern side where rumors swirled that a demon with massive power roamed freely. He couldn't have cared less about the lives of the pathetic human species. It just bothered him immensely that the demon had used him numerous times as a toy to his advantage.

He curled his claws. Sesshomaru relished over the thought of tearing him into pieces. One doesn't merely incur the wrath of his and stay alive for long. He mentally chided himself for playing into that demon's hands. Just like that girl was going to be played.

Yet, she was indeed an interesting one. He could hardly believe that all that power was stored inside that tiny body of hers. She was lacking quite a few qualities, but she did have spirit. His lips twitched when he remembered how she had stabbed a rock through the demon's hand. Sesshomaru scoffed. This was getting out of hand. He hoped this didn't turn into a habit.

He stood overlooking the lush valley below him. As far as his eyesight could reach, there were only trees. Of course, he never relied much on his eyes. Scent was his expertise.

In times like this, Sesshomaru tended to follow his instincts. They were his after all, how could they possibly go wrong?

He walked back to where Rin and Jaken were waiting patiently for him. "Sesshoumaru-sama, where would we be going to next?" Jaken cautiously asked.

Sesshomaru looked down at Jaken. The imp always followed him everywhere he went. He did have the habit of boasting about Sesshomaru to their enemies, much to Sesshomaru's annoyance. For one thing, praises were a waste of time and words. Rather have the opponent decimated in seconds than draw out the match.

"In the direction of the next village on our journey," Sesshomaru curtly replied. He led the way. As time had flowed, his entourage had grown. Having no one would be better when there were enemies all around, but he couldn't just leave them.

Attachment, he thought grudgingly. A fatal flaw if he said so himself.

The dry fallen leaves crunched under their feet. Rin went out of her way to stomp on them. For some very odd reason, Sesshomaru didn't find it irritating. He exhaled forcefully.  It was uncomfortable, but one doesn't feel loneliness because they don't have anyone who loves them. It is because they fear they have lost the ability to love.

Sesshomaru wasn't a lost cause, yet.

He smelled the sweet scent of fruits in the air. "Jaken, take Rin to pick fruits for her meal. I shall scout the area."

"Yes, Sesshomaru-sama," Jaken solemnly said. He led Rin away to the field.

"Sesshomaru-sama, please come back soon, okay?" Rin asked gently. Why wasn't she scared of him?

He curtly nodded in her direction. As the two walked away, he heard Jaken quietly chide her. "Don't order Sesshomaru-sama, you insolent girl." He could imagine Rin's horrified face nodding back.

In Jaken's heart, he held the highest value, but certain actions of his proved to Sesshomaru that there was a slight attachment to Rin as well. Sesshomaru looked up into that vast dark sky. Was this feeling good for him? Or would it lead him to his death? He wanted these answers fast.

The human girl from a different time must have gone home now. If she relaxed thinking that was the end, then that would be where all her problems began. Maybe he should have warned her about it. Yet, that would lead to more problems. This was so troublesome.

This wasn't good for him. He should only care about himself and get on the way, or things would only lead to emotional pain. Now, he was worried about an insignificant girl. He could smell her scent in the air. What now? Had he been so struck by her that he could smell her scent without her presence?

The scent got stronger. His eyes widened infinitesimally. No, the scent wasn't because he was smitten by her. This was because she was still present, and she was injured.

Sesshomaru felt like his feet were stuck in shoes made of burning coal. Getting involved with her meant more attachment, and that too with the human species. He didn't have a hero complex. He should stay here and let things continue as they were.

Something twisted inside him. He curled his toes inside his boot. Sesshomaru didn't know what was going on in the complex soul of his. Now wasn't the time to think about those matters, he decided. Planting his right foot firmly on the ground, he leaped into the night sky, letting his most trusted sense guide him to the utterly insignificant girl.

So, I just finished Midnight Secretary (highly recommend), but Touma Kyouhei is so husband material?! I mean *gasps for air* he is so perfect? Not pushy or overbearing, but a pinch of domination and possession, sweet in his way and nice and adorable and educated and intimidating and utterly, ridiculously cute?! And the heroine is so perfect. It has been so long since I hadn't hated a female lead. I love her! She could marry me too for all I care.

Hope you enjoyed reading this chapter! Leave your thoughts for me! They make my day.
