Chapter one

Charlie

The sound of music and laughter filtered through the walls as I sat on my bed, the traditional gown I wore was pink and had a crossover V-neck, was sleeveless, the sequin detailed mesh skirt started at my hips and had a flared hem just above the ankle. I was traditionally barefoot. My hair was done up in a complicated style with a golden coronet circled with rubies, resting on the carefully made nest of light brown curls, matching my light brown eyes.

It was the first time in over a hundred years for the rulers of the Blue Moon Clan and the Red Moon Clan to meet on neutral ground. The king and queen of the Red Moon Clan was Jasper and Arria Ashton and heir to their throne was Jasper Ashton the second, who was ten years old, the same as me, and king of the Red Moon Clan was Magnus VanBosc, the queen, Patience VanBosc, had died eleven years before during child birth to the heir to the throne of the Red Moon Clan, me, Charlotte VanBosc.

It was this ball that both the Red Moons and the Blue Moons would hopefully start the negotiations of a peace treaty and a way to unite the land once again. Both sides had been involved in the war that started the whole Blue-Moons-versus-Red-Moons-thing.

Thousands of years ago, when our ancestors sailed to the land of Aborah from distant lands across the vast sea, we were a single united nation. We had farmers and salesmen, doctors and healers, mothers and fathers. But most importantly, we had Sorcerers.

These Sorcerers had immense power over the Elements, and through those Elemental powers they cast spells that were connected to their own Element. Each Sorcerer had full dominance over a single Element, Air, Earth, Water or Fire. A Sorcerer couldn’t be created; they had to have an ancestor that was a Sorcerer. The Magic was usually passed down from father to son, mother to daughter, but it sometimes skipped a generation or two. If two Elementally different Sorcerers had a child that child would carry on the Element that was most dominant, for example; if a Fire Elemental had a child with an Earthen Elemental the child would be in control of whichever  Element that will best fit its personality. Like in a fight it’s really more of a free-for-all and favour falls on the best technique, most powerful and a lot of luck and timing, nothing to do with what that specific element is.

There are only two ways to identify a Sorcerer. The first, and most subtle, is that the Sorcerers eyes will glow the colour of their Element when they feel strongly about something, or when they are using their Magic. A Fire Elemental’s eyes will turn red, a Water Elemental’s eyes will turn blue, an Earth Elemental’s eyes will turn green or brown and an Air Elemental’s eyes will turn either a very light blue or opaque. The second sign, and most obvious, is tattooing. Each Magical Creature has a mark on it that will show what they are, with a Vampire it’s the teeth, their speed and grace and intricate tattooing on their necks, on Werewolves it’s the eyes that turn yellow when they feel strongly about something, their speed and grace and pointed ears and the Elves and Fairies with their pointed ears, slit-like pupils and their speed and grace. Sorcerers have tattoos that cover their body when their adults, when their children the tattoos are only in some parts of them, and as they get older they grow and spread like ivy. When they come of age the tattoos are full. My own are like red vines that contrast strongly with my pale skin. It starts on my stomach by circling my naval, they go round by back and across the front my rib cage and straight up, following my sternum and over my right shoulder, they also go down and circle my left thigh, but is considered un-decent to show them in public until you've come of age.

But about two hundred years ago there was a huge power struggle between a Fire Elemental and a Water Elemental. It lasted for half a century, and in the end the land was split in half, the west half for the Blue Moons (the Water Elemental) and the east half for the Red Moons (the Fire Elemental). During the first war many people moved from one side to another and by the time the war was over everyone was on the side they wanted to be on, either the Blue Moons, where everyone wanted to be treated the same and Sorcerers were made to live a mundane life and treated like everyone else, or the Red Moons, where Sorcerers were treated with respect and had the highest authority. But the war didn’t just involve the humans and Sorcerers; it involved all the other magical creatures as well. The Blue Moons wanted all the Werewolves and Vampires and Elves and the other entire MC’s to go into hiding and try to live like the humans so that they weren't slaughtered, whereas the Red Moons wanted them to live as nature intended, even if it meant that a few people got killed.
