Nervousness. It ran through you as you stared at the prep school before you. You heard a lot of good things about this school, like how it integrates both herbivores and carnivores. Though, it did make you think if that was a good idea. Herbivores gave you stares on a daily basis, and in elementary you were mistaken as a coyote or a light furred wolf. It didn't help the bullying at all. You are a golden jackal, you were nothing really special. Your face just seemed dirty even though that was just the pattern of your fur. Oops, you were stalling again by being stuck in thoughts.
Once more, you stared at the school before you, as you started to walk towards it. To sum up your personality, you are a coward. Always had been, always will. You jump at the slightest of things, and your poor tail had seen better days. Always nervously pulling, digging your nails into it. Poor thing was all rugged up. Again, you are stalling by thinking. You get to the dorm rooms before looking at the messily written dorm room number on it:
701
Breathing heavily, you looked down the hall before you. Anxiety had started to make itself very apparent as you darted your eyes from side to side.
" Oh no... "
Slightly tapping your fingers on your pants, you make your way down the hall.
' 680... 684... 688... 693... 697... 699... 700... ah, there it is. '
The door looked congruent to the rest of the others. It appealed your slight OCD, as you stalled once again, hesitating to knock or dare to twist the knob. But of course, manners always came first, and you knocked shyly but firmly on the door. A silent moment passed, and you figured that no one was in there, which was a grand relief. You twisted the knob and peeked inside. The smell of male canines flooded your nostrils, which calmed you down in a weird way.
The suitcase that you had along your travels here found a nice spot near an empty bunk. Noticing the lower bunk having curtains, you rejoiced in silence considering that you would have privacy, especially since citing the clear evidence, there seemed to be a number of roommates in this dorm.
A few minutes later, you needed to use the bathroom. The trip to the bathroom was ordinary, but the trip back to the dorm was definitely different. As soon as you pushed the door to the dorm, you were greeted with a faceplant right into someone's chest. Red flooded your face, as you stepped back, taking in the stranger's scent unintentionally. It was a male canine, a large one at that. You quickly shot up your gaze at the stranger. He was tall, and very fit, not that you were checking him out or anything... Right?
"A-ah! I'm so s-sorry... I didn't see you there..." you quickly apologized, fixing up your shirt.
You noticed that he seemed to be a... wolf? You were pretty sure he was a wolf. Was he a wolf? He had to be a wolf. While thinking, your eyes were burning themselves onto the face of the stranger. The stranger stood there awkwardly, looking away. Once you realized what you were doing, you jumped back, blushing profoundly before bowing repeatedly.
" A-again, I a-am so sorry! I w-was in thought andididn'tmeanjusttostareatyoulikethat-! "
There was an uncomfortable silence for a bit before your ears twitched.
" It's okay. I'm Legosi, are you the new roommate? "
You just nodded in response, inhaling and exhaling before speaking.
" I'm (Y/N), I'm a golden jackal. Could I ask, what type of wolf are you? "
" Grey wolf. "
Again, deafening silence made itself very apparent. You didn't know what to say, but thankfully Legosi had broken it.
" You probably want to go inside. "
He stepped out of the way and you thanked him before you rushed over to your bunk. Closing the curtains, you hide your face in your hands. You must be the most cowardly jackal in the universe, couldn't even talk to your new roommate without making things awkward between the two of you.
Legosi hadn't returned to the dorm. It wasn't necessarily your fault, but you couldn't help to feel extremely guilty. A couple of hours later, the sun started to set, and you could hear people shuffling to their dorms to relax. The last bit of your belongings were finally set, just as the door swung open with a friendly chuckle. Turning your head shyly, you were greeted with a small dog with gold fur. As soon as he spotted you, his mouth formed a wide smile before speaking.
"Ah! You must be the new guy! Y/N right? So glad to finally meet you! My name is Jack!" he exclaimed in a friendly tone.
"Uh, y-yeah... likewise." you managed to say as you both participated in a handshake. Jack then continued to ramble about the school and the people. At least you weren't the one talking. Heh, extroverts.
You didn't mind listening though, as sometimes hearing people talk to let you think clearly. It seemed that so far that the people here (well the ones you've met so far) were nice, and hopefully you didn't have to deal with bullies. You liked being in your own thoughts, no one could judge you. You could make the perfect friend and whatnot. You snapped out of your thoughts when the door opened to reveal more canines entering. Jack's tail wagged before looking back to you.
" Oh good! I can introduce you to everyone. "
He smiled brightly, which you gave a small awkward smile in return. He points to a fennec fox, who was absolutely tiny compared to everyone.
" That's Voss- "
Voss waves and gives a smile, as you return the gesture. The Golden Labrador (you came to find out when you were half-heartedly listening) then moves his finger to a spotted hyena.
" That guy right there is Miguno- "
The hyena holds out a hand, and so do you as you both awkwardly shake it. Jack's finger moves once more to a coyote, who looks kinda similar to you.
" That's Durham- "
" Hello, new roommate! "
He gives a slightly cheeky smile, and you just smile the best you could. Jack's finger moves to the last canine in the room. He was another dog, this time an old English sheepdog.
" and that's Collot! "
Again, it was just a wave for a little hello.
" Everyone, this is (Y/N), and... what are you? You look like a wolf but you don't smell like one. "
" O-oh, I'm a golden jackal... "
You coyly spoke to them as you rubbed your arm. Suddenly, you realized that one was missing. That grey wolf from earlier... Where could he have been? You had only met him for a few seconds, but it felt like you've known him for years. Your heart felt tingly thinking about him.
Everyone was getting ready for bed, as it was around 10:00 pm. You did the same, changing into your sleep clothes, which were some boxers and a long sleeve shirt. You had everything set for tomorrow, and all that was needed was a good night's rest.
Just then, the door opened for the last time. The smell was familiar. You didn't even need to turn around to know who it was. The low husky voice was a symphony to your ears.
"Hey... sorry I'm late."
