It is true, Jon Snow thought as he walked further and further away from the Great Hall. Everything it says is true. He could still here the singer, Mance Rayder in truth, from here. But just to make sure, he looked up the ledge and he wasn't startled Tyrion Lannister was looking down at me. "Is that animal a wolf?" the dwarf asked. Jon decided to go along. "A direwolf. I named him Ghost," he said looking at the direwolf and back to the Imp. "Why aren't you at the feast?"
"Too hot, too noisy, and I'd drunk too much wine," Tyrion replied. Before he could go on, Jon started laughing. I must be going insane, he thought, not for the first time since he found the book. It had been a moon since it was delivered to him with a piece of paper that said 'You better get wine'. It turned out it was right since Jon 'borrowed' a dozen cups of wine in half a fortnight when the book ended with Jon being betrayed and stabbed and winter coming. When he had finished, he had put the book down on his bed and started crying. He had cried for poor Bran being crippled. He had cried for Lord Stark's unjust execution. He had cried for Sansa being tortured by that bastard and manipulated by that weasel. He had cried for Robb being betrayed and killed, just like Jon himself. He had even cried for Lady Stark and the creature that she became. But most of all, he had cried for Arya and the horrors she had seen while on the run from the Lannisters. I had slept crying that day. When he had woken up the next day, he had chided himself. "It is just a stupid book. A jape, perhaps by Theon," he had said allowed. That had turned out to be note the case when the King had arrived at Winterfell. From then on, everything that happened was exactly like in the book. Tyrion saying what he said was the final proof he needed. That was when he realized that Tyrion was on the ground and eyeing him curiously. "What is wrong, boy? You seemed lost in thought. Is it about me?" the dwarf inquired. Jon shook my head and said, "No, I just ..."
"You are Ned Stark's bastard, aren't you?" Tyrion said, and then continued, "Did I offend you?"
"No, you didn't. I am a bastard. You are a dwarf. We are what we are,"
Tyrion looked even more intrigued with me. "It is rare to find people who admit what they are. It is even rarer to find people who tell others who they are."
"Only when we accept who we truly are do we use it like armor so it can never be used to hurt us," Jon said, looking at the impressed face of the Lannister. He felt an absurd feeling of pride which quickly died out when he remembered the fact that he found that line in the book. "Indeed," said the dwarf, "but can I ask, why did you say we? I am the son of the mighty Tywin. Why would I need mental armor?" Jon looked him in the eye and said, "All dwarfs are bastards in their father's eyes." He smirked and left after seeing the shock on Tyrion's face. Jon didn't feel like getting back to the Great Hall so, instead, he went to his room. He bolted the door and pulled the book from under his bed, sat on the ground with it on his lap and began thinking.
The honorable thing to do would be to tell the truth, meaning, either go to Lord Stark and tell him Jon Arryn was killed by his own wife and the Master of Coin, Littlefinger. Or go to the King and tell him that he is being fooled and his wife is sleeping with the Kingslayer. Or both. But the more he thought about it the more he understood how unwise that would be. Lord Stark, being far too noble, would doom himself and his family while trying to take down Littlefinger and start a war with the Vale. King Robert, being far too hasty, would lop off the heads of the golden twin children of Lord Tywin Lannister and maybe even his grandchildren and start a war with the Westernlands. No, just no. If these mess is too be solved, it should be approached delicately and slyly. If Jon was going to save the Stark family, he didn't need the Old Ways of the First Men. Honor has no place in that pit of vipers called King's Landing. But if he was not going to the Night's Watch, the Lord Commander Jeor Mormont would die, killed by wights. Perhaps he should ask Maester Luwin to send a raven to Castle Black to caution Maester Aemon on not bringing dead bodies south of the Wall. He might be the only person who would not ignore the warning. It still feels strange to know that the maester would have become a good friend of Jon's. It saddened him to think that he might never see the old wise Targaryen.
He opened the book to the part right after the feast. The first time he read it, he had been very angry at Lady Stark for being instrumental for him to join the Night's Watch, even though he did want to go. But the more he thought about it, the more he understood Lady Stark's feelings toward him were less of hate and more of fear. He reread it and began discerning the lies Lady Arryn sent to Lady Stark. It was obvious that Petyr Baelish manipulated the younger Tully girl to get the older one. Perhaps I should give the book to Father, thought Jon but quickly scratched that. Even if Lord Stark believed a word in the book, he would act tell Robert Baratheon and the two would declare war on the Vale to seize Lady Arryn and give the King's Justice while the Lannisters would continue to strengthen their hold on the throne and when the time was right, well, 'the King is dead, long live the King'. Even if Lord Stark told the King about his precious Queen too, the war would be with the Vale and the Westenlands. As Jon climbed on his bed and put the book under it, he told himself in a low voice, "All that can wait. First I should make sure that Bran never sees those incestuous twins. Then I can find a way to convince Father to take me to King's Landing with him." As sleep took over his body, he had one last thought. And there are the Targaryens in the East. I should not forget that.
