Chapter 2
***
It was so silent you could hear a pin drop. I had a terrible feeling in my gut. I knew something terrible was about to happen. It was hard to describe, but a sickening sensation swelled in my stomach, urging me to do something. I took a deep breath, willing myself to calm down.
"You're going to murder me, aren't you?" I said casually. "Just so you know, I have nine-one-one on speed dial. Also, corpses do rot. When you're hiding the body, make sure to—"
"I'm not going to murder you. Geez, where did you get that idea?" Max replied, annoyed.
"Hmm, maybe because we've been strolling around the school for centuries, and you haven't said a single word. You can't be lost, that would be pathetic. I can't afford to dislike you even more. I don't know why else you would be so silent. You also can't be ignoring me. I'm a pleasure to be around. Isn't this supposed to be a tour, anyways?"
He scoffed. "I'm not talking to you because I don't want to. Just because you're in a wheelchair doesn't mean I'm going to bow down to you like some slave. Besides, I don't feel like giving you a tour. I only agreed to this to get out of class."
"Ooh, what a bad boy! What's next? You're gonna eat an extra cookie after dinner?" I clapped my hands excitedly. "oh-em-gee, I can't believe I'm talking to a real-life rebel!" I exclaimed in a squeaky falsetto.
He rolled his eyes, going back to ignoring me.
Geez, who crapped in his Twinkies this morning?
We had already gone to my locker and set everything up. I hung my navy blue bag off the handle of my wheelchair.
"It's okay if you don't like me. Not everyone has good taste." I commented, nonchalant.
Cue another eye roll.
"Keep rolling your eyes. Maybe you'll find a brain back there."
Silence.
And more silence.
The most silent silence you've ever experienced.
And, you guessed it, even more—
"Hey!" I exclaimed as he increased his pace, not even sparing me a second glance. I struggled to keep up in my wheelchair. It was almost as if he was purposefully going faster. As if he wanted to get away from me? Why on earth would he do that? Strange, I know. I struggled to keep up in my wheelchair. "You're going to leave a helpless, poor girl in a wheelchair behind? In a giant building that she can't navigate?" I huffed, annoyed. After seeing that he still wasn't slowing down, I continued. "Oh, woe is me! My dear Romeo, art thou Romeo, let down your hair and get me out of this treacherous building!"
"Wrong story, idiot." He replied curtly.
"Seriously, you only reply to correct my knowledge on Disney princesses?" I then noticed that we've stopped in front of a small, drab, dimly lit classroom. Max slid the key in and stepped inside. I followed him in, taking in my surroundings.
"I'll say you have decent taste in crime scenes. However, if I was leading a poor girl to her death, I would probably choose somewhere more—"
"Geez, I'm not going to murder you." He snapped.
"Famous last words," I replied.
"You—What? That doesn't even make sense! I'm supposed to say—"
"Aha! So you are murdering me. I knew it!" I cried victoriously.
"Don't tempt me." He said, rolling his eyes for the millionth time.
