He already hated this damn school. But according to his father, there has been vampire killings in the area, and it was his duty as a rising Alpha to figure out the whole story. Brennan was overjoyed by the idea of hunting some bloodsucking bastards, until it got to the part where he had to masquerade as a high school student.
Back at home, he went to school with his pack at the packhouse and trained hard every day. Running, training, and more running. He didn't realize how much he took it for granted until now. Never again.
Brennan tried to focus on Mrs. Ashcroft, but his mind kept on returning to the scarred girl, Amity, racing to the bathroom with the blonde chick, Bella I think, on her heels. Only the blonde chick returned with the other girl's backpack whispering, "Girl problems," to the teacher who nodded sympathetically.
High school was so strange, and it was only the first day.
He let out a long sigh, he better find those bloodsuckers fast. The faster they were caught, the sooner he'd be back with the pack.
Something hit him lightly on the shoulder. Brennan looked on the ground where a crumpled-up paper lay discarded. He barely restrained himself from rolling his eyes as Brennan picked up the note and read it.
What's your snap?
What the hell was a snap. Like his number? God, high school was strange. It was probably human's way of communicating with each other. Wolves could simply mind link the pack if they needed to communicate with each other. They did have phones just in case, but not "snap".
It wasn't hard to guess who the note was from either. Brennan side glanced Jasmine, who he had the pleasure of meeting this morning, and she was already looking at him. Brennan threw her a smile. She had thrown herself at him as soon as he laid eyes on her in the courtyard before school. Brennan played along, knowing that nothing was more unsuspecting than a player who was more interested in girls than school. It was a perfect cover for the mission.
He scribbled on the note.
Don't got one. Sorry sweetheart.
He threw the note under her desk.
Jasmine picked it up eagerly and frowned at his response her forehead creased in confusion.
She wrote back and again threw the note at him.
You got a number then, Handsome?
Brennan was about to make up a fake number when the blonde girl, Bella, walked in. She took her seat next to his and stared at the wall.
"Are you alright?" he whispered to her, trying to avoid the teacher's attention.
She looked at him, her undying attention taken from the wall and placed on him. She snapped out of her trance.
"Yes, I'm good. What did I miss?" she asked all the sadness he saw was washed out of her brown eyes.
"Honestly, I have no idea," Brennan said with a laugh under his breath.
She laughed in return, but it didn't quite meet her eyes.
Mercilessly, the bell rang, and he didn't have time to conjure up a fake number for Jasmine after talking to Bella. He hastily picked up his backpack and rushed out the class craving some fresh air. At home, he was always outside, barely ever going inside when the sun was still shining. Classes at the pack were even administered under the sun, never a ceiling.
Brennan hoped to lose Jasmine in the crowds of the busy hallway. He stepped into the open air at last and inhaled deeply. Amongst the body odor, he sensed something stronger. It was the smell of lavender. Sweet, sweet lavender.
He just had to get closer, I followed the scent. I probably looked like a madman, but his utmost priority was finding this scent. Nothing else mattered
Amongst the pack, I had the strongest sense of smell, even in his human form it was strong. I tracked the path where the scent was beckoning him. It was toward the forest away from school.
I could see the dark clouds above looking angry and I knew it was about to pour. When it did, I would have no hope trying to find the source of the scent despite his abilities.
His mind was telling him to stop and turn back, it was the first day of school after all I couldn't miss it. But his body couldn't resist, it was trapped under the spell of the intoxicating smell.
I sprinted to the woods, not even bothering to take his clothes off as I shifted into his wolf under the cover of the trees, it was quick and painless. Brown fur sprouted over his body and his bones stretched.
His senses became overwhelmed with the lavender scent. It was a drug and I was addicted. I ran and ran until the scent was almost too much to bear.
I came to a stop and lifted his eyes to the most majestic white wolf. I met her icy blue stare.
The world stopped. She was breathtaking. I had never seen a white wolf, had never even known they existed. I felt like they were the only two beings in the universe. I don't know how long they stood gazing at each other. I could sense the power she radiated, and I knew.
This was his mate. His gorgeous, strong mate.
Mine, I growled.
His mate stepped back, looking spooked. Fear creeping in and invading her crystal blue eyes. She took off into the woods without looking back.
Without a thought, I took off after her. This terrain was unfamiliar to him, and she seemed to know it well. As if she could do this with her eyes closed. She must be a local.
But I was fast. Very fast. I wasn't about to let his soulmate slip through his fingers I had to get to know her. To let her know I meant her no harm.
I felt something wet land on his coat. For one second, I looked up to a dark sky to see rain pelting down.
I looked back in front of him to where his mate took off to find I could no longer see her.
No, I thought, no no no.
I skidded to a stop looking at all the possible paths she could've gone, and there was not a trace of her tracks anywhere. Already the rain washed her lovely lavender scent away.
She was gone.
