I heard voices, distorted voices. I didn't know where it was coming, but I had a feeling it was around me. I tried to move, and I realized that I couldn't then suddenly I felt a jolt of pain straight from my neck to my leg. The burning urge to scream came upon me, but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't my mouth sealed tight.
"she just twitched her fingers, she is waking up" "Christy are you there" "Christy it's mum can you hear us."
I wondered why my mum was talking to me like a kid, so I tried to open my eyes so I could ask her why. And when I did, I realize I was in a hospital ward, why I wasn't sure.
I don't know when the tears started flowing, and I saw my mum face that could only with one word "despair," my dad was there too looking dejected. I was an only child, so I wasn't expecting to see any siblings, but I saw the two most influential people in my life after my parent, Michelson, and Ellie-my, two best friends.
I met Ellie when she moved from Abuja to Lagos after her dad got promoted and made the oversee the branch of the bank he works with here on Lagos. She walked into class that unforgettable day looking a bit lost and confused. The teacher introduced her "this is Ellie James, she is from Abuja, she and her family moved here this month and she will be your new class mate from henceforth" this was in Basic 5. I called her to my seat since I was the only one I usually share in my school. She came over, and with the most charming smile I ever saw, she said, "my name is Ellie" I replied her with my smile "I know Mrs Banjo mentioned it."
"she looks like she doesn't want to be here thou," she observed. I couldn't hold my laugher, and it was true Mrs. Banjo always has this stern look on her face that says "keep off I'm not friendly" I sometimes wonder why she chooses to be a teacher. She looked up at that moment catching us in the middle of our laughing fit "Christy and Ellie be warned, this is her first day and you already influencing her Christy " "I'm sorry ma won't do that again."
I was the trouble maker in class, always having my name is the noise-makers list. So I know what she meant; she didn't want the new girl to pick up my habit; what she didn't realize is Ellie maybe worst than I was. From that day forward, we were inseparable--the two trouble maker in Basic 5.
We met Michelson years after. I never told Ellie, but he has had a massive crush on her from the first day.
We were now in secondary school, and it was time for the lunch break, Ellie and I was going to the cafeteria to get what to eat when this short chubby boy ran up to us breathing so heavy you would think death was chasing him. We paused and looked wondering what was so important that he had to run like his life depended on it, catching his breath, he said. "I... I.. You... You"
"speak up boy or better still catch your breath" Ellie caution the out of breath boy. I think it took him at least 3 Mins or more for him to catch his breath. He was stretching his hand out, holding something that looks like money "you dropped your money," the blushing boy told Ellie in a voice that sounds like a girl's. "what?" Ellie screamed, realizing the boy was right; she must have dropped it when we decided to race to see who got to the cafeteria first.
She collected the money from the boy with no name "thank you, you just saved my life. What's your name Samaritan?". That's Ellie for you, flaring up one minute and so sweet the next. The boy told us his name was Michelson. He would like to walk with us to the cafeteria without taking his eyes off Ellie for a second, who was oblivious to this as she had other pressing matter - the spicy chicken they sell in the cafeteria on Tuesdays. That was why we were racing so we could get there on time so she could choose the biggest ones. "Let's go Christy, have you forgotten its spicy chicken Tuesday (let me hard she came up with that on her own, no help from me whatsoever) and yes Michelson you can join us" and from that day forward we became the reigning trip of our class.
Seeing them sitting beside my bed now looking all depressed and with tears in their eyes, I couldn't help but think back to days when we made our mum's throw our birthdays on the same day even thou we didn't share the same date. My birthday was July 11, while Ellie's was June 2, but we always celebrated our birthday on August 15 at Michelson's since he was during the holidays. We did this for years until we outgrew throwing parties and switched to clubs or took a little trip.
Looking at them now, they looked happy and proud I think seeing I made it out of the crash- the crash I'm beginning to remember, I would love not to, but you don't always get what you want.
It's our graduation week, I did not mention we went to the same university--yes we did, different course thou. Michelson, who was always the smartest even thou he never looked it went ahead to study physic why. Ellie studied accounting; she has always loved numbers; my favorite pass time was reading, so you guessed. I studied English Literature.
Four years after getting our admission we were graduating with a first-class, we were going to throw a grand party as Michelson was the valedictorian for our year, yes he came top in the whole school's how smart he was. I volunteered to get party stuff, Ellie the fashionable one decided it was her duty to get us our clothes, she said, and I quote, "we need to wear something jaw-dropping that will get everyone talking, our bestfriend is a star."
We went our separate ways, Michelson wasn't with us he traveled for an interview, his grades were so good he was already getting recruited by a company even before graduation. I went to ShopRite to get everything one needed for a party. Ellie called me as I was paying for all I got with the credit card Dad gave me to celebrate me graduating with first-class "hy babe are you almost done can you come meet me in TUx I need your help with something" "I thought you had the fashion part figured out."
"stop being smart and just come help me out, I will be waiting, I'm at the men section."
"ofcourse you are, give me a minute." I paid for everything I got filled my car with the goods and decided to cross over since LUx was just across from where I was shopping, I locked up and left the car behind in the hopes that we would walk back together when we finish with whatever she needed help. I never got to find out what she wanted because immediately I tried to cross the road when I saw the green light, I was hit by force so massive I was thrown to the other side of the way. The last thing I thought before losing all consciousness was
"I was in the right, the green light was definitely on. I didn't see that wrong right?"
I vividly remember the pain thou; it was so bad that I couldn't breathe; this was all before they carried me off in an ambulance. My blood soaking my cloth and dripping to the ambulance's floor was all said to me since I was unconscious to this very moment when I'm looking at my best friends - one that i was supposed to meet a min ago. The other was supposed to be in an interview in Abuja. So the next thing that came out of my mouth was but surprising and comforting to my friends, "shouldn't you be in an interview, like miles away from here?" I said, looking at Michelson, daring him to tell me why it was physically possible to be at two places. But he just laughed and held on to my hand
"I'm so glad you back with your sense of humour I see."
"of course I'm always funny still haven't answered my question" this time, he looked sad, but before he could talk, Ellie moved closer with the most weeping eyes I have ever seen and said, "Christy, you have been unconscious for a day." Now I was crying, there was no holding it back.
