"Maya come on don't be like that you need to eat"I begged as she pushed her plate away from me

"Mommy I don't like waffles they nasty"she huffed

"You need to eat before school and this is all we got right now"I added

We were in San Francisco with my mother when I got the call about montae.I didn't know how to explain it to maya but I had to.The first few months were hard but we got through it.I decided to move back to LA for Montaes mom.I didn't want her to be alone,she really was the only thing she had left.

But it's been hard to find a good paying job out here so I've been trying my hardest to make ends meet.I started working at this gym which plays 12/hr which really isn't shit.Times like this I miss Montae we didn't have a lot but we lived comfortable.

"Fine Maya dont eat,but you can't be late"I said grabbing her backpack

She drank the last of her juice and put on her backpack.I grabbed her plate and ate a few of her waffles then put the plate in the sink.

I picked her up and walked down our building stairs

"Nigga fuck you if there's a problem do something!"I heard a females voice yell then a gun shot go off

"Baby that's why I love you,you not a bitch"the voice said

"Girls need to fix their priorities"I said as I walked to the bus stop at the end of the street

"Baby you not cold?"I asked maya

"A little"

I took off my jacket and put it on her.The bus finally came and I paid as Maya sat down

I sat next to her and she leaned on me as I held her.Times like this I really miss him,I still remember the day I got the news

Flashback

"Mom you can't let her get candy everyday if you're not going to pay the dentist bill"I groaned as my mom ignored me and handed Maya a pack of sour patches

"Come on now maya get ready for bed"My mom said as she walked to her room

"I can't I gotta say goodnight to daddy,like I always do"

"Maya I've been calling him all night maybe his phone died"I said to her

"Well call Zia she's usually with him!"maya whined

"Fine Maya"

I took out my phone and called Zia

"Hey Z is Montae with you?"I asked as she answered

She didn't say anything as I heard her holding back her tears

"What happened did you and your boyfriend get into it something?"I asked getting ready to drive down there and beat some ball player ass

"Ty,Montae got shot,they got him in the ambulance but it was to late"she sobbed

I dropped the phone and fell to my knees.My mom rushed over,I just broke down as maya was confused.That was the hardest night of my life

End of flashback

"You think we could go see daddy after school?"Maya asked

"I'll ask grandma to take you,I have to work another shift baby"

"I miss when daddy was here you didn't work so much"she huffed

"I miss it too,you don't even know"
