REINA DIDN'T KNOW WHAT WAS WORSE. Maybe it was the fact that this was the third time in two years that she would be starting at a new school. Or the fact that the short redheaded girl in front of her who was supposed to be giving her a tour of the school would not shut up about the history of an art classroom.
People talked too much, in her opinion. It was much easier to think, act, basically do anything when the only noise was the sound of silence. Of course, it wasn't easy to find that inside of a high school classroom.
Deep in thought, Reina jumped back a little when two big eyes framed by even bigger glasses started straight at her.
"I know you must have a lot of questions, but please put those on hold. I must tell you about this one time-"
"Actually," Reina interjected, cutting off the girl who's name she already forgot and causing her to purse her lips, "I do have a question. When are you gonna be done?"
The girl, Hailey or Hannah maybe, blinked a couple of times as if she didn't understand. With an exaggerated sigh, she looked down at her nonexistent watch.
"First period starts in less than ten minutes, I suppose we can cut this short and I'll show you to your classroom," Reina released a breath of relief, "But we should continue this some other time! How about wh- Wait!"
She stopped her rant only to notice Reina already on her way down the hall, surprisingly moving in the right direction.
Reina wasn't sure why she needed a tour of the school. It wasn't big, and the layout couldn't have been much different than the other schools she attended in recent years.
Hailey—she decided she would call her that—stopped abruptly in front of a large wooden door with a sign labeled "Ms. Lincoln" sticking out from the wall beside it. She turned and gave Reina a big smile, patted the door twice, and proceeded down the hall to her own classroom.
"What a weird girl," she thought, and pushed her way into the empty classroom.
It wasn't a huge classroom, which was surprising for a Chemistry lab. There were rows of tables big enough for two filed from the front of the classroom until the back, and large windows covered two of the walls, allowing a flood of sunlight to cover the interior.
Reina made her way to a table, not too close to the back, but far enough from the front so that the teacher wouldn't feel inclined to call on the new girl who was smack dab in the middle of her view.
She didn't like attention. Rather, she preferred to be left alone by most people. Her tour guide must have noticed this, considering her quick departure. Solitude was a gift in Reina's mind, and she treasured it among many other things in life. Sure, she enjoyed going to a party or hanging out with some (not-so-close) friends. But most days you would find her in a room far away from others, probably listening to music.
