Jessie was taking a late night walk with Leon, his hand enveloping hers as naturally as a key fitting into a lock. The warmth of his skin emitted a tenderness only she could detect, giving her a feeling of comfort and peace. A chilling breeze ruffling her ginger hair,, she shivered involuntarily, unconsciously stepping closer to Leon who squeezed her hand in response. He turned to look at her, his mystical blue-green eyes studying yours quizzically as his lips parted.
"Jessie" His voice was emotionless, flat, as he spoke his next words. "Why are we here?"
She paused in her steps, tilting her head to the side as she considered his question. "Why not?" Jessie's voice harboured a tinge of confusion as apprehension took its hold, her clouded thoughts preventing her from thinking rationally.
"It's past midnight, Jessie. We have school later."Jessie's lips slowly curved upwards and she slowly glanced away from him to gaze over the lake, breathing in the scent of nature's finest creation.
The mystical, circular light above radiated its luminescent glow to create an ethereal streak across the surface, the water glittering like the sparkle in a person's eyes. The dark, endless midnight sky stretched across the horizon, specks of white painted across the untouchable canvas.
The night was magical – a diamond amidst rubies and opals. It was no wonder that she preferred to be here, outside, rather than cooped inside her tattered room.
"Leon" Her voice wrapped around him like a gentle embrace, as pleasant as the first rays of sunlight after a rainy day. "If you're tired, you don't have to stay."
He shook his head and tugged her towards the direction of the lake, the rhythmic lapping of the water a sweet accompaniment to the silent melody of the night.
"I told you, Jessie, I'll always be with you if you can't sleep," he murmured.
She laughed briefly, letting go of his hand to bend down and touch the water with her fingertips. The coolness of the liquid made her smile, and it wasn't long before Leon knelt down beside Jessie.
"Then why did you ask me why we're here?" The teasing tone of Jessie's voice betrayed the dark circles underneath her eyes and she grabbed the boy's arm for balance when she almost toppled into the water. His eyebrows knitted together and he engulfed her hand with both of his, holding Jessie's fingers to his chest. Leon's wordless gaze was enough to tell Jessie what she already knew.Jessie sighed, turning away from him to cast her eyes back over the lake. It was so beautiful underneath the majesty of the midnight sky – Jessie always came here whenever she couldn't sleep. The tranquillity of the night would lull her into a state of peacefulness, and occasionally, she would be able to fall asleep after viewing the road-like reflection of the moon on the water. Every hour of rest was precious to her, and whenever she was with Leon, she felt more at ease, more relaxed. So recently, she had become selfish, calling him while he was surely asleep so that she wouldn't have to be alone while she took your midnight walks. Jessie believed that she slept better because of him, and despite the guilt gnawing away at her mind whenever she saw tiredness line his eyes, Jessie continued picking up her phone to call Leom and he continued coming to her side by the lake.
Jessie was tugged out of her thoughts when Leom gently pulled her into his embrace, resting his chin on top of her head and holding her tightly as a cool breeze blew through the air.
"Ten more minutes," he whispered, the huskiness of his voice making her shiver. "Ten more minutes and then we're going back to my place to sleep. I have to wake up early in the morning."
Regret instantly washed over her and she tried to squirm out of his grasp, only to be held firmly in place with his arms. "Let's go back now. I'm sorry that I called you – I won't do it anymore," Jessie said worriedly.
The boy hummed in response but remained unmoving. "Ten minutes. And if you don't call me whenever you can't sleep, I'll get mad at you."
"But-"
"Let me do this for you, Jessie. You already do so much for me."
"But Leon-"
"It'll make me worry more if you don't call me," Leon murmured, pulling back slightly so he could see her big black eyes, bright with the serenity of the moonlight yet also somehow dull, the tiredness of her face tangling his heartstrings and making him yearn to be of assistance to her in any way he could. "So Jessie, please do not hesitate to do so."A soft smile broke out on her face and she buried her head into Leon's chest, trying to hide her flushed cheeks as she grabbed at the material of his soft hoodie with her hands.
"Thank you, Leon." Her voice came out muffled but the boy could clearly hear the relief and gratitude in those three words.
His face slowly mirrored her expression and he dropped his head on top of hers, closing his eyes and enjoying the warmth her body emitted.
"Leon." Her voice was breathless as she glanced up at him. "Why... why is your heart beating so fast?"
Leon's cheeks instantly reddened at her question and he shoved her face back into his chest, now painfully aware of the rapid pounding of his heart. He didn't want Jessie to see his expression right now, his cheeks a rosy hue from the sweetness of her words.A giggle escaped her lips and Leon stiffened. He swore his heartrate just accelerated at the enchanting sound of her laughter.
"You're so cute," Jessie tittered, her voice resounding in his ears like the echoing chimes of a bell, further warming his cheeks. "Let me see your face."
He reluctantly allowed her to untangle herself from his arms, staring at the ground uncomfortably as she studied him. She took in the vividness of his blue-green eyes as they averted away from her, tracing her fingertips along the creases in his forehead that spoke his embarrassment without a single word. Jessie's gaze lingered on Leon's slightly-parted lips, admiring the soft curves that were at the end.Leon was absolutely gorgeous, being able to steal her breath away without fail every time he locked eyes with Jessie.
"Let's go home, Leon." Her voice was barely above a whisper, the gentle sound fading into the lapping of the lake water. She finally felt at peace after his reassurance, breathing in the scent of the clear lake with Leon next to her and the moon emitting its heavenly glow in an aura of tranquillity and radiance.
"We can stay a little longer if you want, Jessie," Leon assured plainly. "I don't mind." The blush had disappeared from his face, but as his eyes met hers underneath the moonlight, your world stopped for a moment – she could only see him and his own light, rivalling even the majesty of the moon. She grabbed his hand, loving how gentle his grip was despite the roughness of his skin. "I think I can sleep now," she smiled. "Thank you for being with me tonight."
The pure and utmost sincerity of her voice was enough to convince him. A rare upturn of his lips graced his own face after a momentary pause and he allowed his head to drop to press a gentle kiss to her forehead. "Any time."With their fingers interlocked, he began leading her away from the lake and towards the pathway illuminated under the faint glow of a street lamp. She could see his face in the side of her vision as emotionless as ever as he dropped your hand to wrap his arm around your shoulders, pulling her closer to his side. From this sweet, simple gesture, a delicate bud of warmth inside her heart bloomed, like a rose opening up its exquisite petals for the first time.
No words were needed for Leon to express his everlasting love for Jessie
