Prologue:
“Blair.” I heard a voice calling. Shame I didn’t know whose it was. I was hearing all sorts of noises, someone crying, someone praying. I wasn’t sure and i didn’t care. I turned my head to see the same sight id been seeing for god knows how long. Blurry shapes moving. All black. I turned back to see the only picture i could understand. A coffin. Who was inside – No idea. Then a fuzzy shape covered my shoulders and I was pulled away. Seconds later everything went black.
Chapter 1
“Blair” I groaned as my eyes opened slowly, to see a sad face staring down at me. Mum. She was wearing a black dress and a black hat. Her eyes were red by crying, her face wet with tears. She helped me get up and went over to the table to pick up a hot mug of... tea?
“How you doing?” her voice was croaky and would tremble sometimes. Then, all of a sudden, a shooting pain went up my arm and I winced, accidentally spilling some drops.
“Careful, you took a pretty bad fall. Dr Simmons came over and casked it. Its broken but it will heal in a few days” I looked down and stared at my arm, in a cast, like Mum had said. How did that happen?
“I’m so sorry Blair.” I looked up to see tears running down her face again, as she tucked her blonde hair behind her ears.
“Mum, its okay. It’s just a broken arm...”
“Oh God, Blair!” Mum tried to laugh, but failed, and began heaving with sobs.
“You don’t remember, do you?”
“Remember what…” I felt weird now. Did something happen that she’s so upset about it. Was it Dad? What about Kristin?
“It’s Kristin, she, she…” Then she started sobbing again. “She’s gone.”
Oh. That was a surprise. Why would big sis run away when she had everything? With her green eyes and high cheekbones she was by far the prettiest girl in school. And the sportiest and most intelligent with her awards. What could have happened to make her go?
I set my mug on the bedside table and leaned against the headrest.
“Why would she want to run way... when she had everything?” The last part came out without me knowing.
“Sh… she didn’t run away, she…” Mum cleared her throat. Boy, was she upset. “…she got run over 2 days ago.” I felt as though the whole floor underneath me had collapsed and I was falling down a big, black hole.
“What? How did sh… why didn’t I… when was…”
“She was coming home from her graduation party. You were there, remember? You told her to hurry up because it was cold and, and she crossed ov… over only to…”
“That’s not true, coz if it HAD happened, I’d, I’d remember…” I was crying now, then the doorbell rang.
“One second.” Mum got up and left the room. WHAT THE HELL HAD JUST HAPPENED?! She crossed over because I told her to? So it was my fault? The whole room began to spin. I groaned and slid under the duvet, blocking out the world and all my fears and surprises.
“Blair.” I peeked to see an old man standing next to my mum. Gramps.
“Hello Blair.” He came over and sat down.
“Umph” I tried to say ‘hi’ but it wouldn’t come out.
“Julie… why don’t you leave us for a minute. I fancy some tea, if you don’t mind.”
“Oh… of course…” and mum hurried outside to the kitchen.
Gramps started scratching his tummy for a while and then looked up.
“Listen kiddo… you’re probably feeling confuse and all that, and your mum’s tears aren’t making you feel better are they?”
“Umph” That meant ‘no, they’re not’
“I’m gonna tell you exactly what happened, okay?” I looked up at him.
“O.K”
“After the graduatuion party, we all went to collect her. She was having a great time and boy did she look great. Anyways, your mum tried texting, your dad called in and in the end you were fed up of waiting ‘coz you were missing some T.V show and you went to call her. Then… well…”
“Yeah. She got run over coz of me.”
“Now young lady don’t you dare say that. She got run over because she wasn’t careful. Not because you forced her to. No!”
“Umph”
“Yeah.”
“What about the funeral?”
“Oh. That was yesterday. You fell, remember.” And he pointed to my arm.
“Oh.”
“Yeah.”
“Thanks for telling it straight.”
“Umph”
We sat there, him looking at my arm, me looking at my hands. YEAH RIGHT! Those wer the words I wanted to say, even though this whole thing seemed so real, it couldn’t have happened. I kicked the duvet off, feeling hot and agitated.
“D’ya wanna go for a walk?” Good old gramps, always knowing what to do.
“Okay.”
“I’ll meet you downstairs in 10 minutes.”
